What is special about lantus (insulin glargine) insulin?

What is special about lantus (insulin glargine) insulin?

Basal insulin: 40% of the Insulin a pancreas makes is done constantly and the other 60% is done to respond to your carbohydrate ingestion (when you eat). Lantus (insulin glargine) is the first Insulin that was design to take care of that 40% because it is designed to work over 24 hrs without any peak in action minimizing low blood sugar reactions. There are a: Variety of different medication regimens that can be effective, but you need to couple them to diet, exercise and weight loss. The most effective metformin dose is 1000 mg twice/day. Multiple doses of rapid acting Insulin before meals and a basal Insulin such as glargine at bedtime is better than mixed insulin. Other oral therapies and injectable glp-1 agonists need to be discussed with your docto Read more

Can you tell me if I took about 140 units of lantus (insulin glargine) long acting insulin would it result in a fatality?

Can you tell me if I took about 140 units of lantus (insulin glargine) long acting insulin would it result in a fatality?

Depends: Hi. No way to tell. Are you a type 1 or a type 2? What's your normal Lantus (insulin glargine) dose? If you made a grievous dosing error, go to the ER (drinking juice on the way), so they can have an IV in you and be prepared for a crash. I have type 2's who use Lantus (insulin glargine) 300-400 units/day; 140 units wouldn't kill them. I have type 1's using 16 units/day; 140 units would mess them up pretty badly. Be safe. Read more

What to do if I forgot my lantus (insulin glargine) dose 6 hours ago?

What to do if I forgot my lantus (insulin glargine) dose 6 hours ago?

Fair question: Hi. It happens. You can do either of two things. Just use your fast acting insulin (Novolog, Humalog, or Apidra) as needed for the next 18 hours to manage your BG, or take the Lantus (insulin glargine) 6 hours late and your next Lantus (insulin glargine) dose on time, and accept you'll be dose stacking for the first 6 hours of the next dose. Watch your BG carefully during this deviation in your regimen. Good luck! Read more

What should I do if I didn't take my once 24 hours lantus (insulin glargine) insulin?

What should I do if I didn't take my once 24 hours lantus (insulin glargine) insulin?

Resuming it ASAP: Diabetes is a result of persistently high sugar over long period of time, but acutely it is much more dangerous to have too low sugar than high. So missing a dose or two of diabetic medicine is not detrimental, but should be kept to a minimum. I suggest resuming your medicine asap. Eat well, exercise regularly, take your meds as prescribed, and see doc regularly as advised. Good luck. Read more

3 hours Late taking lantus (insulin glargine) injection last night. When should I take tonight's injection?

Lantus (insulin glargine): Lantus (insulin glargine) is a once-a-day injection usually taken every 24 hours. Don't worry if you miss 1-3 hours - no short term or long term things to worry about if you are keeping your blood sugar under control. If there is wide fluctuation in your blood sugar levels I recommend you see a diabetes educator. Read more

How do I inject lantus (insulin glargine) twice a day?

Pen or syringe: Hi. I might be missing your point. Dial the dose on a pen or draw up the dose in a syringe, stick in your site of choice, and push in the plunger. Count to 10, and pull the needle out. Do that roughly every 12 hours. Read more

What is the proper lantus (insulin glargine) dose for a 60 year old man with type I diabetes and when should it be taken?

Totally individual: There is no one right dose of insulin for everyone. Lantus (insulin glargine) can be used once a day, or divided into two doses for larger amounts. I cannot guess what this particular person's dose should be. Read more

I take lantus (insulin glargine) 20 units at night and glimeperide 2mg in the morning was 73kgs a year ago now am 88 kgs what can I replace the 2 with?

I take lantus (insulin glargine) 20 units at night and glimeperide 2mg in the morning was 73kgs a year ago now am 88 kgs what can I replace the 2 with?

No easy answer: Your weight gain can be due to many reasons. The improvement in your blood sugar control since being on these medications is probably a major reason. Unfortunately, medications like glimeperide and Insulin promote weight gain, whereas other medications for diabetes such as metformin and glp-1 agonists promote weight loss. You should talk to your doctor about these other possible medications. Read more

Good: The Insulin pen is simply a more convenient way to take insulin. You can get Lantus (insulin glargine) and NovoLog in a pen. You will be able to dial the dose of Insulin needed. You would use a pen needle with the pen to inject the insulin. Each pen holds 300 units of insulin, so it will typically last for weeks. You do not need to refrigerate the pen once you start using it. Read more
