Is there a difference in the brands of formula for babies (similac, parents choice) my baby has acid reflux and throws up on PC formula not any other?

Minor difference: Most milk-based infant formulas are essentially the same, although different companies will sometimes make very minor changes such as a different amount of calcium. There are some formulas which are designed to be easier to digest, and some babies with acid reflux have less spitting with these formulas. Powder vs ready-to-feed can make a difference, too.

Bath time can be fun: You can put her in a partially reclining baby tub or other baby bath device (some even come with safety belts!), and using a baby or sensitive skin cleanser and a washcloth, bathe her all over, then rinse all over. Babies do fine with only a few baths each week. Make bath time fun by talking or singing to her entertaining her with bath toys.

How hot do I need to get water in a pan on the stove to warm up babies formula?

Why ever?: Babies do fine with formula at room temperature and some even enjoy it right out of the refrigerator. Warming is a step you can skip and spend the time nurturing your baby.

My baby is two days old and he seems to be shivering and random times. I know that babies don't shiver to keep warm, should I be concerned?

Swaddling may help: A very young baby can loses heat easily and shiver. Newborns also have normal shivering reflexes especially when they are placed for diaper change. All thing being equal if baby feeds well is alert try swaddling for a bit

Is it possible a portable heater could make my nursery a little too humid & warm, causing my babies to get sick more easily?

Is it possible a portable heater could make my nursery a little too humid & warm, causing my babies to get sick more easily?

Unlikely: Heaters will actually dry out a room, not make it humid. Often, the humidity can drop 10% or more in a room with a heater compared to the rest of the house. A simple humidity gauge can help you monitor the situation. Many run on button batteries and can register rapid change in humidity. The preferred humidity within a kid space runs 40-45%.Above 50% you increase dust mites, below 30% they cough.

My infant, 19 months, has been limping almost to the point of not walking on her left foot. It's warm to the touch with slight swelling. Broken?

My infant, 19 months, has been limping almost to the point of not walking on her left foot. It's warm to the touch with slight swelling. Broken?

Hard to say: Possibilities range from a bug bite reaction to an infection in her foot/ankle. Without an exam, its just to hard to say. Pick up the phone and call her doc, you can discuss all the things you see and decide how soon and where to be seen.

What are some signs or symptoms that a parent may observe if their infant has autism?

What are some signs or symptoms that a parent may observe if their infant has autism?

In infancy: Core symptoms of autism look different at different ages, but always include delays in social communication. A 4-month-should goo and coo " in sync" with mom, a 6-month-old should raise his arms to be picked up, a 9-month old should respond to his name. The diagnosis includes much more, but these are things parents can notice early. Firstsigns. Org has good checklists for parents. Check it out!

Will it confuse an infant if one parent speak to him/her in two or three languages (on separate occasions)?

Great question: When we live in taiwan we spoke english to my brother who was a baby and the amas spoke chinese to him. He ended up speaking a mix of english and chinese. You would only understand it if you spoke both languages. We later moved to scotland and he quickly forgot the chinese and spoke only english. I hope one of the developmental pediatricians responds to this question. Fascinating.

If an infant has fifth disease but the parents don't, does that mean it's not hereditary?

If an infant has fifth disease but the parents don't, does that mean it's not hereditary?

Confusing question: Fifth disease is a pattern illness caused by a common viral illness. It is transient, self cures, and has nothing to do with heredity. When a kid has it and his/her parents do not get it, it means the parents had it as kids and are immune. Fifth disease occasionally affects adults if they never had it a kids. It can be quite entertaining.

How can a parent prevent infant skull "deformity"?

How can a parent prevent infant skull "deformity"?

Change head position: The best prevention, and treatment for infants under 3 months of age, is not allowing the baby to sleep with the same head position. One the baby is fully asleep, change the head position to the opposite side of the previous sleep period. If there already is head "deformity", have the infant sleep on the normal or less deformed side consistently until the head becomes normal appearing.

Will all babies with a parent that is a dwarf have achondroplasia?

Will all babies with a parent that is a dwarf have achondroplasia?

Not necessarily.: Achondroplasia may be inherited as an autosomal dominant trait, meaning that getting the gene from 1 parent causes the child to have the disorder. If 1 parent has achondroplasia, the infant has a 50% chance of inheriting the disorder. If both parents have the condition, chances increase to 75%. However, most cases appear as spontaneous mutation, meaning 2 parents w/o it may have a child with it.
