Depends: It depends on the cause. Insomnia can occur for many reasons to include anxiety/stress, sleep apnea, restless leg syndrome, heart arrhythmias, medications, foods, prostate issues and so on. While some of these may seem benign, they should be addressed and corrected to prevent long term issues. An eval by your family physician would be the first step, then appropriate followup testing if needed. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

What could my doctor and I do about such severe insomnia? I have tried everything i can think of and all suggestions i've found online. Thanks
Look beyond drugs: I think most of the time that using therapeutic techniques such as relaxation, cognitive therapies and stress management is often more helpful and long lasting than utilizing medications alone for treatment of insomnia and anxiety issues. Talk with a counselor at your school/university about getting some assistance with test anxiety issues. They can help. ...Read more

Yes: Ambien (zolpidem) can show up in hair even after 1 dose. I do not know if your work tests for this specifically, or just sedatives in general. I would not recommend taking another person's medication anyway because it may not work for you, or affect you badly. Especially since your work tests you and you do not have a prescription yourself, you should not take your wife's Ambien (zolpidem). ...Read more
