Symptomatic care: You can try removing the hair if it is ingrown and allowing any pus to drain. This may be all that you need to do. If the redness or pus persists you may need an antibiotic. You could start with a topical generic triple antibiotic lotion. If that doesn't work then you may need a course of oral antibiotics.

Needs to be seen: Probably benign growth. It can be removed will leave scar. The only definitive diagnosis would be removal and submitting tissue to lab.

In-grown hairs: In grown hairs can get infected and cause bumps called folliculitis which need daily cleaning and antibiotics ( can be topical) usually to resolve. But would f/u/ w/ a doc as we have no picture to evaluate the particular bump you are referring to.

Single vs cluster: Usually an ingrown hair is an isolated occurrence, while most often, herpes produces several vesicles. The appearance of the lesions also sometimes can help as herpes are tiny blister-like bubbles full of clear-yellow fluid with redness around them. Ingrown hair often has pus (and hair) inside it, also with redness around it.

Ingrown hair: As long as it has not developed into a large pus pocket, you may carefully try to free the entraped hair by cleansing with rubbing alcohol and using a sterilized needle to unroof the trapped hair. If this does not work or if there is significan infection, then you should see a doctor.

Hair.: Hairs aren't pea sized. Must be something else. Infected cyst. Inflamed follicle. Not a hair. Surgical removal may be needed. Time will clarify the problem. If recurrent. Have it removed.

Cyst: Simple cysts can appear when the fluid of a hair follicle becomes trapped. As the fluid builds up it creates a soft mass. Squeezing it can release the fluid. If it is foul odor then this may be a sebacous cyst. Cysts recur and can become infected. A simple procedure in your doctors office can remove it.
