Fatigue, see below: Most side effects are rare, but of the ones that patients are more likely to experience with this med, fatigue/tiredness, diarrhea, and upset stomach are more common. It rarely, and i mean rarely, can cause symptoms similar to systemic lupus erythematosis (sle or lupus). This drug induced lupus is reversible when the med is stopped. many serious ones: I never prescribe Fosamax (alendronate) to my patients; i believe it is a bad drug. It commonly causes side effects like heartburn ; can cause serious side effects like osteonecrosis ; heart arrhythmias. The oral dosage is more problematic because of variable absorption and first-pass effect through liver. It is completely absorbed with sucutaneous injection and doesn't bolus liver. A few: Interferon used in high dose for adjuvant treatment does have multiple side effects. The uncommon but severe ones include; suicide due to depression, liver damage, severe blood problems. Suggestions: Avonex (interferon beta 1a) is an interferon, and causes a multitude of adverse side effects, and due to it's minimal potency, and need for injecting, I no longer use in any of my patients. There are better tolerated oral meds on the market, and even the injectable Copaxone would provide less side effects, and superior efficacy. Explanation: If you just started Avonex (interferon beta 1a) for ms, may be transient ms flares after the first series of injections, which is not unexpected. Would be surprised if your injection caused any infection, and do not believe the external fixator relates at all. However, I have a very negative opinion of avonex, (interferon beta 1a) which does not work very well to stabilize ms, as all the other dmt's work far better.
