Postauricular crease inflated/swollen Ear pushed outward—Inflamed pimple in ear for 4 days—What causes the soft inflated feeling behind ear?infected?
Eustachian Tube: A clogged ear with no infection or fluid in the ear is usually the result of a poorly functioning eustachian tube. This is the connection from the middle ear to the nose, responsible for maintaining proper air pressure in the ear. When clogged, the ear feels full or stuffy. ...Read more
Negative pressure : In order for the ear to work properly air from the outside of the ear drum has to be balanced by air on the inside of the eardrum. In an intact ear drum the only way for air to get into the middle ear space is up the eustachian tube. If the eustachian tube doesn't work well the air inside the middle ear gets used up creating a negative pressure. Eventually this pressure can become so low that fluid is sucked from the lining of the middle ear space. ...Read more
What does soft tissue densities in mastoid air cells, middle ear cavity, and sphenoid sinus mean?
Nasal Sinus X-rays : The densities are either an active infection in the sinuses or most likely residual chronic inflammation from previous infections. The findings do not sound serious unless severe acute pain and fever is present. The best option is to review the radiographic evaluation with the ordering physician or an ENT specialist. ...Read more
Not typically: If the tympanic membrane (eardrum) is intact, it serves as a barrier that protects the middle ear from organisms which may enter the external ear canal. If the tympanic membrane is perforated (e.g. From trauma) or surgically opened (e.g. For ear tubes), then there is a direct route for passage of infectious organisms from the outer ear into the middle ear space. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers

During a cat scan Dr said I had fluid in my mastoids behind ear. Recommended sudafed. Will that help? Does that mean I have a sinus infection?
Not necessarily: Fluid can back up into mastoids related to inner ear problems with fluid and sometime infection. Infection in mastoid which can result in necrosis and bone involvement can have fluid in mastoid air cells as well. Sinus infections involve paranasal sinuses frontals (above eyes) ethmoids medial to orbits, and lateral to nose, and maxillary inferior to orbits. These are facial in location. ...Read more

Small, soft to touch pea sized lump on mastoid bone behind ear, been present for a couple of years now, mobile and painless. Anything to worry about?
Lymph node: Probably nothing of concern. The differential diagnosis generally would be a reactive lymph node versus an epidermal inclusion cyst. This could be removed to be sure however with growth or changes. An Otolaryngologist would be able to determine this readily on physical exam. ...Read more

How do you diagnose a mastoid infection in head and bones , pit gland, hypothalmus, eye's and ears.Which scan is the most diagnostic? And blood tests?
Mastoid infection: Hello, you have had many imaging studies including MRI and a ct scan of your head. I didn't see any report of fluid in your mastoid portion of your temporal bones so i wouldn't suspect this infection is present. An acute mastoid infection would also most likely be accompanied with an acute middle ear infection. Looking at your history, i would suspect that you may benefit from a psych doctor. ...Read more
Shadow on CT scan mastoid bone area, MRI results clear, had ear infection and still do. Would MRI only show intercrainial and not bone disease?
Probably: Mri and ct are complementary studies so there is always the possibility that one study will show an abnormality that the other doesn't. Typically a 'shadow' in the mastoid bone means fluid and that should show up on mri. But not knowing for sure what is meant by 'shadow' in your case, i can't be 100% about that. Ask your doctor about your case specifically or an ENT specialist or a neurologist. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

The bone behind my left ear is swollen and very painful like a burning sensation. Have a lump where ear meets jaw. Could this be a mastoid bone infect?
Unlikely: It is impossible to have a mastoid infection without a middle ear infection. The tendons of the large neck muscles attach on the mastoid bone and you could have either a tendonitis or myositis. The lump where the ear meets the jaw could be the parotid gland tail. See an ENT doctor for a specific diagnosis. ...Read more

Could be: It could be from the past infection, however, your doctor is correct in being concerned for a hard immobile node. It would be prudent to follow your doctor's advice. Could a lymph node behind ear be cancerous it feels hard when touched, i haven't got infection am feeling fine other than I have high prolactin levels?
It depends....: Enlarged nodes can be cancerous especially if they are painless and hard to feel. But a lot depends on the size of the lymph node. If it is more than 1cm (half inch) and it increases in size over the next month or two then you need to get a medical exam to make sure it is not cancerous.A biopsy of the node is the best way to find out what is causing it to enlarge. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
