During a cat scan Dr said I had fluid in my mastoids behind ear. Recommended sudafed. Will that help? Does that mean I have a sinus infection?

Not necessarily: Fluid can back up into mastoids related to inner ear problems with fluid and sometime infection. Infection in mastoid which can result in necrosis and bone involvement can have fluid in mastoid air cells as well. Sinus infections involve paranasal sinuses frontals (above eyes) ethmoids medial to orbits, and lateral to nose, and maxillary inferior to orbits. These are facial in location. ...Read more

Small, soft to touch pea sized lump on mastoid bone behind ear, been present for a couple of years now, mobile and painless. Anything to worry about?

Lymph node: Probably nothing of concern. The differential diagnosis generally would be a reactive lymph node versus an epidermal inclusion cyst. This could be removed to be sure however with growth or changes. An Otolaryngologist would be able to determine this readily on physical exam. ...Read more

How do you diagnose a mastoid infection in head and bones, pit gland, hypothalmus, eye's and ears. Which scan is the most diagnostic? And blood tests?

Mastoid infection: Hello, you have had many imaging studies including MRI and a ct scan of your head. I didn't see any report of fluid in your mastoid portion of your temporal bones so I wouldn't suspect this infection is present. An acute mastoid infection would also most likely be accompanied with an acute middle ear infection. Looking at your history, I would suspect that you may benefit from a psych doctor. ...Read more

Shadow on CT scan mastoid bone area, MRI results clear, had ear infection and still do. Would MRI only show intercrainial and not bone disease?

Probably: Mri and ct are complementary studies so there is always the possibility that one study will show an abnormality that the other doesn't. Typically a 'shadow' in the mastoid bone means fluid and that should show up on mri. But not knowing for sure what is meant by 'shadow' in your case, I can't be 100% about that. Ask your doctor about your case specifically or an ENT specialist or a neurologist. ...Read more

The bone behind my left ear is swollen and very painful like a burning sensation. Have a lump where ear meets jaw. Could this be a mastoid bone infect?

The bone behind my left ear is swollen and very painful like a burning sensation. Have a lump where ear meets jaw. Could this be a mastoid bone infect?

Unlikely: It is impossible to have a mastoid infection without a middle ear infection. The tendons of the large neck muscles attach on the mastoid bone and you could have either a tendonitis or myositis. The lump where the ear meets the jaw could be the parotid gland tail. See an ENT doctor for a specific diagnosis. ...Read more

Could be: It could be from the past infection, however, your doctor is correct in being concerned for a hard immobile node. It would be prudent to follow your doctor's advice.

Could a lymph node behind ear be cancerous it feels hard when touched, I haven't got infection am feeling fine other than I have high prolactin levels?

It depends....: Enlarged nodes can be cancerous especially if they are painless and hard to feel. But a lot depends on the size of the lymph node. If it is more than 1cm (half inch) and it increases in size over the next month or two then you need to get a medical exam to make sure it is not cancerous. A biopsy of the node is the best way to find out what is causing it to enlarge. ...Read more

1cm bump behind ear near earlobe that is painless, feels kinda rubbery to me and doesn't grow. I had ear infections all mylife. Related?

Probably not: "Typical" ear infections are usually in the middle ear or the external ear canal, and would not cause any growths near the earlobe. It may be a skin tag or keloid if you happened to have a skin infection or cut or burn on your earlobe. I have seen keloid growths from infected ear piercings also. Since it is fairly large, I would recommend having it looked at by a Dr. ...Read more

I have pain when I touch the backside of my head, above the base of skull, but behind ear. Sinus infection/cavities may exist. Advice?

Unlikely sinus: Pain in the back of the head is unusual for a sinus infection. This would be more likely an ear infection but this is unlikely as well. This could be a mastoiditis which is rare but plausible. This can come from a middle ear infection not treated or inadequately treated. Other causes could be referred neck pain. See your doctor very soon.
Best wishes. ...Read more

I currently have a sinus infection, I have noticed a hard lump between my jaw and ear. It is making the bone behind my ear hurt is this sinus related?

Blocked gland?: A sebaceous cyst is a collection of oily fluid that occurs when an oil gland is blocked. Some folks are more prone to them than other and they often appear on the neck, shoulders, and back. Try to avoid skin products that are oily. I would also stay away from transfats and bad oils, which is good for overall health. Doc can diagnose and if that's the case, remove it. Peace and good health. ...Read more
