What are the tests for infection in the blood?

Blood Culture

Blood
A suspicion that infection is in the blood can be confirmed by taking a blood specimen and submitting it to the lab for culture. In the lab, blood is transferred to a nutrient media, like planting seeds in a garden, and monitored over several days for signs of growth. If the material becomes hazy, a small amount is examined under a microscope. If they see germs they have confirmed it.

What can cause infection in the blood of a 10 y?

Many things

Sepsis

can you get a blood infection from a blood test?

Very unlikely

Blood
The phlebotomist (person drawing the blood), will clean the area thoroughly with alcohol or iodine -- so the chance of an infection is really really low.

What are the symptoms of an infection in the blood?

Germs in blood

Blood
Once a germ gets into the blood, symptoms depend primarily on the type of germ. Viruses have blood phases & typically produce fever spikes & muscle aches, sensitivity to light etc. Bacteria will do this & add blood pressure instability, prolonged fever or low body temperature, fatigue & prostration. Fungal germs or yeast trigger responses like bacteria.Viruses & bacteria can trigger a rash.

do fungal infections cross the blood-brain barrier?

They can

Encephalitis
While the blood-brain barrier is a critical regulator of interaction between the blood stream and the brain, it cannot keep everything "out". Many infections, including fungal can spread to involve the brain. Some very serious fungal infections commonly involve the brain (central nervous system-CNS)
