Infected Hair Follicle (Folliculitis)
If I have an infected hair follicle (folliculitis) on my leg, can I spread it to someone else merely by shared bedding that the follicle touched?
Not likely: Folliculits would not be contagious in the way you described. I trust that you are keeping the area clean and using a topic antibiotic ointment, like neosporin. If it spreads to other hair follicles, it would be prudent to see your doctor for an evaluation. For good health - Have a diet rich in fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, milk and milk products, nuts, beans, legumes, lentils and small amounts of lean meats. Avoid saturated fats. Drink enough water daily, so that your urine is mostly colorless. Exercise at least 150 minutes/week and increase the intensity of exercise gradually. Do not use tobacco, alcohol, weed or street drugs in any form. Practice safe sex. Get HPV vaccine. ...Read more

Clean and dry:
Keep the area clean and dry. You may use an antibiotic cream like Neosporin, available over the counter. If the lesion is in your genital area, quit shaving. Contrary to your view, shaving genitals is unhygienic.

What skin diseases can cause a change of color in the hair follicle in the infected area of the skin?
I have what seems to be an infected hair follicle on my chin. It's affecting the left side of my face.
Depends: Mild folliculitis usually heals on its own in about 2 weeks. You can take care of yourself at home with warm compresses made with white vinegar or burow's solution. These may ease itching and help healing. Also, medicated shampoo can be used to treat folliculitis on the scalp. If the infection doesn't go away, you may need an antibiotic or antifungal cream. ...Read more

How can I prevent a really irritated looking hair follicle (medial mid-thigh) from becoming infected?
Bacitracin + bandaid: What I would do is throw a glob of antibiotic ointment over it, then a big Bandaid -- one of those cloth ones that actually stick. The antibiotic ointment will act locally to wipe out any bacteria that may cause an infection, and the Bandaid will protect the area from further injury which is probably what led to the problem in the first place. In a day or two, if not better - show it to a doctor. ...Read more
