What to do for infant 5 weeks who is constipated. Breast fed with rice cereal in pumped milk for reflux, also on Zantac (ranitidine) two times daily. Has not had bowel movement in two days and is very fussy

What to do for infant 5 weeks who is constipated. Breast fed with rice cereal in pumped milk for reflux, also on Zantac (ranitidine) two times daily. Has not had bowel movement in two days and is very fussy

Stop the rice: Stop adding rice cereal to the pumped milk (good job on breast feeding, by the way!). Keep breast feeding and keep the zantac (ranitidine). Rice cereal is very constipating! for reflux elevate the head of the crib. In addition to constipation, rice cereal before age 6 months is related to obesity in later life. You may also try a glycerine suppository (found in the baby section). After 7 days call md. ...Read more

3 month infant suddenly sticking out tongue when trying to breast feed - refusing nipple.Cries when trying to feed bottle. He's on 2ml of ranitidine. ?

Need PCP evaluation: not enough information for reason why ranitidine prescribed. Infant needs a thorough PE to evaluate problem. I suggest stopping the ranitidine to exclude possible side effects, unless aspiration following feeding has occurred. Many babies erp up a lot but grow normally. ...Read more

I gave my baby 3 ml of Zantac (ranitidine) instead of 1.5 ml. Is that to much?

I gave my baby 3 ml of Zantac (ranitidine) instead of 1.5 ml. Is that to much?

Baby should be fine: 3ml =45mg of Zantac (ranitidine) and it maybe a bit high for your baby, but should be fine. In adult, we often give double the dose for single-daily dose (i.e. 150 twice/day, or 300 once daily). You can skip the next dose and i would not expect any problem. See my previous answer about dosage of Zantac (ranitidine) for baby--a weight-base calculation. If you have additional concerns, consult doc. Good luck. ...Read more

More questions: I suppose his initial diagnosis is reflux since he's on prevacid (lansoprazole). Pyloric stenosis is fairly common in male infants especially in the first born ones, usually manifesting itself after the first month of age. Vomiting if frequent and inability to gain weight or actual weight dropping an dehydration may be other symptoms. Thickening formula may help, burping and keeping upright after feeds +. ...Read more

My baby (8.5lbs) was rxed 3ml Zantac (ranitidine) 2x/day at 6 weeks. Is that too much? We have been on it for 10 days. I'm worried it'll cause kidney damage.

My baby (8.5lbs) was rxed 3ml Zantac (ranitidine) 2x/day at 6 weeks. Is that too much? We have been on it for 10 days. I'm worried it'll cause kidney damage.

Reflux: I depends on the concentration of the medicine. Usually zantac (ranitidine) liquid is dispensed as 15 mg in 1 ml. If your baby weights 8.5 lbs, the dose should be more around 1 ml twice a day but you should check with your doctor to verify the correct dosing. If the baby is not getting better, you may want to visit a gastroenterologist (GI) specialist. ...Read more

Respected dr last year angio done and I am on med-tab plavis -baby asprin -lopressor12.5mg tab Zantac (ranitidine) shell i contineu?

Probably: It depends on what was done during the angiogram, and on the rest of your medical history. Certain stents require Plavix (clopidogrel) and/or Aspirin for a certain amount of time, and remember that all those medications reduce the risk of cardiovascular events in certain people. Its is best to talk to the physician who performed the angio. ...Read more
