My infant boy has picked up an ugly cough. How can I treat it?
He's 23w (19 corrected) 2nd vaccines done 2 days ago. No fever or vomitting

Treatment varies: There are no cold and cough treatments for infants. All of the over the counter medications have no effect and can be harmful to your baby. First have your baby examined at his Doctor to make sure that he does not have any signs of infection. If symptoms are viral then normal saline for the nose and humidified air can be helpful. If you are breastfeeding that is the best medicine. ...Read more

My 6 wk infant has had runny seedy green poos since weaning him onto formulae. No fever or blood and isn't vomiting. Would it be safe to try soy?

My 6 wk infant has had runny seedy green poos since weaning him onto formulae. No fever or blood and isn't vomiting. Would it be safe to try soy?

Normal poop: While it is certainly fine to try soy formula, what you are describing is perfectly normal poop for a 6 week old. Their stools are very runny and seedy, and colors range from yellow to green to brown to orange. The colors we don't like are white, red and black. These sound like very healthy, normal poops, so i don't think a formula change is even needed. ...Read more

My infant son vomited while he was asleep. Does not have a fever. What should I do?

Monitor the situatio: Infant will often have the equivalent of a wet burp in light sleep stages. This can reflect their tendency toward gastoesophageal reflux after a good feeding & is not necessarily a sign of illness. Willingness to stay on a the regular feeding schedule & lack of other worrisome signs gives you time to monitor the situation & see if this progresses to something more involved. ...Read more

With the exception: of fever, all other symptoms can be attributed to pregnancy. But fever is not normal in the first trimester, so you may have a viral or bacterial infection just like anyone else can. Monitor your symptoms closely, and if they worsen and you cannot keep fluids down, head to the doctor's office or emergency room to get help for you and make sure baby is ok. Gastro-esophageal: Reflux is a common cause of vomiting in low-birth-weight babies. Pyloric stenosis is another possible cause, usually with projectile vomiting by 6 weeks. If baby was ill as a newborn, there may be other causes. If vomiting causes inadequate weight gain ( less than 20-30 gms./day), it is definitely worth having baby's pediatrician evaluate ; treat or refer to a pediatric gastroenterologist. ...Read more
