Infant And Toddler Health Stool Frequency
5w newborn has 1-2 bowel movements/day supplemented with breastmmilk, sometimes seedy yellow sometimes yellow green and clay. Baby strains and cries.
Varies: You can get many different stool colors with Rotavirus. One more common color, in my experience, has been a distinct "technicolor green". As it progresses you can see clear watery stools, yellow stools, and finally brown. With the advent of the vaccine we hardly ever see Rotavirus these days. ...Read more
16 mon. Old son has frequent bouts of prolonged sticky foul smelling stool, and trouble digesting any milk including toddler formula. Why is this?
2w old girl fussy and gassy breastfed/supplemented. Pediatrician changed to soy formula. Normal Bowel movements only during rectal stimulation worried?
Don't worry: First, if at all possible to just breast feed and not supplement formula at all would be best for fussy/gassy infant. Human milk is for human babies. You'll make enough if she feeds from you regularly. Next, it's ok to do rectal stimulation for a little while if that how she can relax her sphincter. MANY babies squeeze their sphincters instead of relaxing it, and then grunt and cry. Normal! ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
BM in formula fed: Infant. They may go from several times a day to once a week. It is very much a variable thing. The idea that an infant has to go everyday or they are not " normal" is just not true. Think about how different we all are as adults. As long as baby does not have a rock hard tender abdomen, no fever, is eating well, and not tearing its little bum when it goes it is okay. What goes in will come out. ...Read more
How often should a breastfed + formula supplemented baby have a bowel movement? Bowel movement forced by rectal exam after 36 hours of last stool.
BM and baby: Babies poop at very different intervals. GENERALLY breast fed babies poop more frequently than formula fed/supplemented babies. If you child is not in any distress I would NOT be doing rectal probing to force a BM. Only a trained physician should perform this as serious injury can occur to your child. Expect breast fed baby to poop 3-6 times a day and formula fed baby maybe 2-3 a day on ave. ...Read more
Possibly: Green stools are usually due to bile--from the gallbladder--which has traveled too fast through the intestines to be broken down. Antibiotics will alter the bacteria that normally live in the gut and may speed up how fast stools pass through as well--so the "undigested" bile may give stools a green color. ...Read more

My toddler has trouble with cow milk, and lactose free milk. He becomes constipated after a few cups. But cow based toddler formula gives him diarrhea?
Simplify: Most american children drink way too much milk and yes milk can result in a child who is very constipated. However formulas are filled with vitamins and ions and electrolytes that make you have a diarrhea in excess because it retains water in your intestines. Try to simplify his diet more water maybe some herbal tea that has no caffeine, and a lot less milk i preferred my kids eat their dairy. ...Read more
8wk old formula fed, whether 1 urination in diaper or a full diaper baby's pee smells...a concern? Or is that normal? Baby eats very well!
Any other symptoms?: And what does it smell like? Fishy? Mousy? Sweaty feet? Fruity? Just very strong? Odd urine odor may be caused by accumulation of smelly metabolic precursors or byproducts or possibly UTI with urea-splitting bacteria. In a healthy, asymptomatic, and thriving baby who is growing well, without fevers or vomiting, it's likely ok, but you should call your pediatrician so they can ask more questions. ...Read more
2 month old formula fed baby passing adult-like stool? Semi hard constitency/long tubes. She is very fussy/cries most of the day. Formula change?
In the absence of : diarrhea, vomiting, poor weight gain, eczema, wheezing or other signs of milk protein allergy or milk protein intolerance, I'd say take your baby & a diaper full of stool to her pediatrician, discuss your concerns & wait to see what her physical exam reveals before trying an elimination diet. An elimination diet includes re-introducing the suspected offending food under medical supervision. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

Eat more fiber: Eat more fiber, eat more vegetables, if you up the amount of vegetables and natural fiber you eat, you should have no problem having bowel movements. Also exercising should help.
