Nerve (Definition)

The brain and spinal cord communicates with what is occurring in the internal organs and limbs by nerve fibers where are like electrical wires with insulation (myelin) and the "copper" (axon). Within brain and spinal cord these nerves connect to other nerves via synapses on both axons and dendrites. A nerve can carry information regarding sensations, and ...Read more

I have nerve pain in my right index finger after playing violin for a nine hour gig. I'm hoping it will go away on its own but I can hardly play now.

Rest: Musicians have injuries that are very similar to athletes, you need to rest to let it improve. In addition, I think you need a full history and physical exam. Age? Smoking history? Weakness? Facial asymmetry? Tick bite history? I would get a full exam including a focused neurological exam and some labs drawn. Stay calm, rest, and see MD, good luck. ...Read more

How long for nerve pain at blood draw site, i.e forearm, that extends to palm, little, ring fingers to resolve? 7 days since the draw. Signs to watch for?

It should resolve: Quickly. If not see your doctor for evaluation. It's unlikely that a nerve was injected or pinched, but there could be swelling from the blood draw if it leaked into the tissue causing inflammation around the nerve. So, you may benefit from applying warm compress around the site, and seeing if that helps or not. Using anti-inflammatory OTC meds. If it's numb, tingling, painful, please see your Dr! ...Read more

While going through an allergic reaction to an antibiotic I was having stinging nerve pain in fingers and toes now all over body can I have MS now?

Criteria for MS: Hi JeriS,
Typically symptoms related to MS are on one side of the body but can be both sides as well occasionally. The symptoms typically go away followed by a period with no symptoms followed by returning of symptoms perhaps elsewhere in the body. If this is the scenario you are experiencing then you may need to consult with a Neurologist who can guide you in the right direction.
Best of luck ...Read more

I had 4 fingers amputated in May. Plus skin grafts on hand I am still in pain, throbbing, numb how long will this last? Taking gabapentin for nerve pain

Not Good, Hands Down: This is a problem. The tips of the fingers are designed for sensitivity. And the nerves often freak-out when disturbed like yours have been. The pain and heightened sensitivity can last for a long time. So, before your body gets used to it (yes, it can adjust, but you won't like it)you'll need some hand rehab if that pain doesn't go away soon. There's no ideal medication for this, so talk to your doc ...Read more

Can ADHD meds cause nerve damage? Ie numbness in fingers and joints, neck/shoulder tenseness, crippling sciatic nerve pain. Are these all related?

No. Stimulants can: Constrict blood vesselsraise blood pressure (usually by 5-6 mm hg) & ⬆ pulse (usually by 5-6 beats/minute), but they don't cause impingement of nerve roots with numbness, tingling & pain in the areas served by specific nerves. See your primary care to initiate evaluation for the cause of your symptoms. ...Read more

I am having shoulder pain and nerve pain from last 2-3 weeks& recently I find that one of the portion of my finger is blue. What might be the reason?

Circulation problem?: Get checked ASAP if your finger is turning blue, like today. If it comes and goes, get checked this week. Hard to say what is going on, but if you smoke or drink alcohol or use caffeine, stop! If you have begun any new supplements or over-the-counter meds, stop those too. Good luck! ...Read more

Hurt my l shoulder 3/7. Pain was instant but now have a painful nerve pain going down my arm (ulnar side) going into my pinkie finger is this urgent?

Evaluate Neck: If you are not improving have your doctor order a cervical spine mri. Many times a herniated disc in the neck can cause arm pain especially if you have not improved with the medications and physical therapy. If it is a herniated disc you may need evaluation from a spine specialist to determine what other options might be needed (injections, surgery, etc) to help reduce pain. ...Read more

Since 2 weeks I have lot of bone and nerve pain around elbow region of both hands. The nerve pain extends to ring finger. 31 yr male. Is this serious?

Consider: The radiation to your ring finger raises question of ulnar nerve compression at elbow in cubital tunnel, but the focal elbow issues seem primary and maybe medial or lateral epicondylitis, bursitis, or even a boney or joint issue. Wonder if some of this evolved due to primary B-12 problems. ...Read more

I have been getting pain along the back of my left hand along the outer most vein. It feels like nerve pain and comes and goes.?

More detail: Would be helpful. The good thing is that the symptoms come and go. The bad thing is that it makes a diagnosis more difficult. There are some nerve issues that cause the pain you are experiencing. These can be local to the forearm and wrist and sometimes from the neck. If the have persisted for more than a few weeks then get checked out by your pcp. ...Read more

I started taking baclofen for facial pain few weeks ago and for few days now I have a nerve pain in my right hand. Can that be because the baclofen?

Very possible: It is a very complicated drug that really has limited indications and I am not sure how this would be a drug used for facial pain. It needs to be stopped carefully to not get further withdrawal symptoms.

The first order with pain is to find out the cause and treat a cause. Not to treat the symtom with a dangerous drug ...Read more

I had oral sex before 3 days with message guy It was a blowjob and I start to feel leg, hand nerve pain the next day and I'm worried dat I have hiv?!

Get tested: See your doctor and get HIV nucleic acid test. If the result is negative, repeat the test in 6 months. It is very unlikely that your symptoms are due to HIV, as it is too soon after potential exposure. If it was the massage guy who applied his mouth to your penis, the risk is minimal. ...Read more

If anxiety/tension/fear, mild nerve pain in left chest, shoulder and hand (tingling sensation for one nerve in hand). What could be the reason?

Can not state: With certainty. This is one situation in which medical evaluation needs to be done to ensure that there is not an underlying medical condition. If tingling sensation of hand is not exclusive to panic attacks - then neurological assessment is likely indicated. This will allow for determination of whether symptoms are related to anxiety/ panic. ...Read more

Get intermittent nerve pain on dorsal side, outer edge of left hand, along right side of knuckle. 61 female, on tegratol and lamictal for epilepsy.?

Hand pain: Sometimes this can be associated with the epilepsy, but if it is more like a problem perhaps from the elbow down to the outside border of the hand, called cubical tunnel syndrome, or compression of the ulnar nerve on the inside of the elbow. Especially is your arm/elbow is laying down a lot, or you have this symptom at night and wakes u up... That's probably it... Go see ur doc to have it tested. ...Read more
