Keep it clean: I'm assuming that you cleaned it out by washing in cool clean water. Now keep it clean and apply anti-bacterial ointment. So do I!: So do I on my index finger! This is completely benign (not a health problem at all) and has nothing to do with your previous biting habits. Think of it like a freckle or a discolored hair. It is made the same way by the nail cells right at the quick. They put dark pigment (melanin) into their growing nail and it extends as the nail grows. Could be: If it on only one or two nails that argues for local damage to the nail or nail plate underneath the nail. If it is in the nail proper it will just grow forward and out and you will cut it off. If it was systemic -eI.e. You ingested something- I would expect all the nails to be affected. Finger pain: You probably have a subungual hematoma where there is blood under the nail which appears black. If you don't have a fine hole drilled through the nail quickly it will lift the nail off of the nail plate and you will lose the entire nail. If you feel uncomfortable doing it, go to the ER. Not fungus: Vertical streaks in the nails is not indicator of fungus. This may be extra pigment going from your skin to the nails, which is harmless and not treatable.
