Alkaline Phosphatase (Definition)

The normal range is 20 to 140 iu/l.[12] high levels can indicate active bone formation occurring as alp is a byproduct of osteoblast activity (such as the case in paget's disease of bone). Levels are also elevated in people with untreated celiac ...Read more

I got a blood test done and I've got high levels of alkaline phosphatase. What does it indicate?

Liver disease, etc..: This usually means liver involvement. It can also mean biliary obstruction, pregnancy, and bone diseases. If can be transiently elevated in acute pancreatitis. Other lab values need to be looked at to determine the specific cause. See your doctor to go over the rest of the blood work. ...Read more

Suffering from hepatitis a, I still have high levels of alkaline phosphatase and bilirubin. Main problem is severe itching all round the day, ?

Yes: The elevated bilirubin is what causes the itching. The bilirubin is deposited in the skin, that is what makes you yellow, and it itches. There is nothing you can do except wait until your liver gets better and the bilirubin drops down to normal.

In the meantime, taking an antihistamine might help, but you have to watch for sedation. Talk to your doctor about that. ...Read more

Hard to say: If the alkaline phosphatase was high while other liver enzymes were normal, it can indicate many things - gallbladder or bone problems would be high on the list. Additional tests to break down the alk phos and additional tests of liver, gallbladder and bone function can help make a diagnosis. However, it is not uncommon to have mild-moderate elevations of alk phos and never find a cause. ...Read more

Medicine for high alkaline phosphatase levels?

Medicine for high alkaline phosphatase levels?

Wrong approach: Alkaline phosphatase is a lab value to tell a physician what is happening, not a medical problem to treat. It can be high just because you're growing (teens tend to be maybe 5x the upper limit of the reference range). About 5% of older folks have a high alk phos for "no reason", presumably paget's of the bone that never becomes evident; nonfasting samples may have it from the intestine. ...Read more

What do you know about high alkaline phosphatase levels?

Plenty: You describe yourself as a 73 year old lady and I'm betting you feel well but have an alk phos a bit high on your routine chemical profile. Many folks, depending on blood type, shoot the alk phos up after eating. Maybe 5% of folks your age have a high alk phos because of subclinical paget's disease which we aren't going to treat or worry about. "treat the person, not the labs.". ...Read more

Why would alkaline phosphatase level be low?

Why would alkaline phosphatase level be low?

No reason.: There are ranges of "normal" for each blood test done. These may be different from one lab to other, depending on the type testing done and reliability of lab. Also, if a specific test is very abnormal and doesn't make sense clinically to the doc, it's probably lab error: just repeat it. That being said, low levels on many tests are not a problem: alk phosphatase is one. 'fagetabatit'-:). ...Read more

Upper end of normal: The level is above the upper limit for normal but not by much. All lab results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and you should discuss it with your doctor and see this site for info.

My alkaline phosphatase level is 129 what does this mean?

Normal: No lab value means anything in isolation. Further, assuming the units are IU/mL, this is right in the middle of the reference range. Usually alk phos is part of a panel that's used for health screening. You are probably not a teen in your growth spurt, in the third trimester of pregnancy, a Paget's sufferer, or a person with a liver mass obstructing bile flow. Thanks for asking and best wishes. ...Read more

What are the reasons for my alkaline phosphatase level becoming low?

What are the reasons for my alkaline phosphatase level becoming low?

Low alk phos (ALP): Deficiencies in vitamin b6, folic acid, vitamin c, phosphorus, zinc, and protein can lead to low alp as well as an excessive intake of vitamin d. Hypophosphatasia, a rare genetic disorder affecting bone development, can cause low alp. other conditions associated with low alp include cardiac surgery,  hypothyroidism, and pernicious anemia. ...Read more

My blood work showed a level of 228 for alkaline phosphatase test. Will I need more test? What could it mean?

Yes: An elevated alkaline phosphatase will need to be evaluated with additional blood tests to determine why it is elevated. If your other liver enzymes are elevated, particularly, ggt, your doctor will likely order an ultrasound. ...Read more
