In My Family Certain Traditions Or Values Are Very Important
What do you think?: Minority groups / grievance groups cherish the holidays, outfits, ways of talking, and social controls that maintain identity. Even in a world of science, the best holidays (thanksgiving for gratitude, "the christmas spirit" for generosity, days to be thankful for freedom) reinforce the best things that make us happy and keep good people together. Our new age gives us more options -- value them. ...Read more
Way fewer infections: Americans turned away from the practice since the 60's - part of the wave of 'natural' is better and if we were meant to be foreskinless, we'd be born that way. I do not like my medium sized gap and i don't want tradition braces. Will invisalign close my gap?
There is a Chinese tradition that you cannot ''eat ice cream during your period." Is there any science behind this?
Perhaps...: I am not aware of any scientific recommendation to avoid ice-cream during your period. But maybe you have just explained why the Chinese are usually thin! Women tend to crave chocolate, sweets and fatty foods during their periods and can put on weight during this time so knowing this and avoiding it could be helpful. Best wishes! ...Read more
Is it ok to take a few different collagen supplements along with a tradition hair, skin and nails. Or is it too much?
It may be ok: I'm not sure that oral collagen supplements will do anything and topical collagen is not absorbed. No one is injecting collagen any more, as it has fallen out of favor. Biotin is a good supplement for hair and nail health- 2.5mg daily (what you don't use you pee out). Your pcp should be able to assist with supplements or a personal trainer/nutritionist. ...Read more
I was diagnosed with pcos, and the tradition medicines (metformin) for it make me very sick. What are some herbal options i can try taking?
No: You most likely are on regular metformin. The slow release version is cheap and much much better tolerated. If not trying to conceive, you should be on a birth control pill to control it best. There are no herbal options that have any significant impact on the problems. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
FLU SHOTS: is the nasal mist spray with a live virus more effective than a tradition flu shot with a dead virus? Can the live virus make you sick?
Would marrying a female cousin from my mothers side cause any complications for pregnancy? For some people this is normal tradition.
Genetic Disorders...: There are two copies of every gene. In some genetic disorders, if one gene is abnormal but the other is normal, the affected person will be normal. If both genes are abnormal, the disorder will manifest. Marrying a cousin carries an increased risk of these genetic disorders because the chance that both you and your cousin both carry the abnormal gene is higher so your children may be affected. ...Read more
VERY VERY IMPORTANT: Dear bgonzalez, i feel that family history is at least 50% of a patient's evaluation. I still believe that family genetics is greater than 50%, perhaps 70% of my focus on a patients's potentially preventable disease. If there is breast cancer in the family at an early age-more attention to early diagnostic testing is appropriate. Myriad now has certain tests available. Borderline personality disorder thanks for reading and any help you can provide. I have a family member who i'm fairly certain is bpd. I believe she's had similar problems stemming from childhood.

Part : Part of the challenge with having borderline personality is an inability of the patient to manage their emotional world. Often they will be controlling in order to give them some sense of their internal chaos. I would recommend the book, "stop walking on eggshells" by randy kreger to help give you some perspective and tools to deal with your BP family member. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Depends: Any family member can help. Generally the better relationship you have, the more impact / higher "protective factor" you can have on helping to prevent alcohol or drug use in another family member. There is also no substitute for modeling. Avoid the "do as i say, not as i do" phenomenon. If someone you love is addicted, don't give up, keep trying to get help, but don't facilitate codependency. ...Read more
Is it important to tell family members about your bipolar condition. So that they can understand moodiness..Or not worry them (wife excluded)?
It depends: If you have an understanding and supportive family it can be a good thing to do. If the family is highly dysfunctional and it's members are personality disordered and unable to show empathy it would be at the very least an exercise in futility. Discuss with your psychiatrist first.Best wishes. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
