Get a plan: You will want a supervised plan of dis-impaction, scheduled evacuations during the day (assisted as needed) and a stool wetting agent (not fiber) to keep your stools soft. Plan for a year or so of work to retrain your system and you should see eventual improvement. Short term interventions will usually fail.Good luck. ...Read more

Not likely: From the standpoint of the medical profession, black stools -called melena - are always assumed to be blood. Usually representing bleeding from stomach or "higher up" within the intestines. Colon bleeding usually is red. Unfortunately, bismouth containing medications can also cause black stool, but even with that type of product, one cannot be sure there is not bleeding also. Needs evaluation. ...Read more

No: Darker but not black. Black stool can be from blood entering and mixing in the stool high up in the GI tract notably stomach and duodenum. Black can also be from iron pills and high iron intake in consuming a lot of high iron meals like spinach and green leafys. East to rule out blood with a simple smear at the doctors office. that's my advice. ...Read more

He is not emptying: Stooling incompletely can allow build of feces. That can stretch the bowel and cause inadequate signals from the brain to the bowel for evacuation. Clean out is essential to constipation therapy. Daily measures are important afterward. Those should continue in cases of chronic constipation for 6-9 months. Consider peds GI evaluation if your pediatrician is out of ideas. ...Read more

Impacted stool: It means that pt has severe constipation. This is common in elderly pts also in pts taking narcotics ( strong pain killers). Many medications contribute to it. Tx is to increase fluid intake, increase fiber or fiber supplements( fibercon) stool softeners , and 3xwk or if no bowel movement in 3 days. Digital disimpaction may be necessary if hard stool present in anus or rectum with or w/o enemas. ...Read more
