Kaopectate vs imodium (loperamide) which is better?

Anti-diarrheal meds: Depends on the individual and the situation. With heart-burn like symptoms, kaopectate is good at coating the upper intestinal tract - equivalent to pepto-bismul. Imodium (loperamide) is a synthetic anti-diarrheal medicine. If you're having diarrhea from a virus or soiled food etc, let the diarrhea pass without taking meds - drink plenty of fluids / hydrate. If chronic of on-going, see a gastroenterologist. ...Read more

Will imodium (loperamide) help my stomach flu and diarrhea?

Loperamide: Loperamide is an opioid-receptor agonist in the myenteric plexus of the large intestine; by itself it does not affect the central nervous system. It will alleviate diarrhea in many cases but must be used with caution if one suspects true colitis with salmonella, shigella, e. Coli or clostridium difficile since it may precipitate toxic megacolon. ...Read more

Can i take imodium (loperamide) for AC chemo side effect diarrhea?

Yes, maybe: Anti-diarrheal drugs are helpful in chemotherapy induced diarrhea. However, need to be sure that the diarrhea is from chemotherapy and not infectious -- such as clostridium difficile toxin (cdt) induced diarrhea. Cdt pcr can detect. In that case the bodies natural reaction is to get rid of the toxin by voiding with diarrhea. That diarrhea needs antibiotics for a potentially prolonged time. ...Read more

Which of the follow is most effective: pepto bismol, imodium, (loperamide) or kaopectate?

Which of the follow is most effective: pepto bismol, imodium, (loperamide) or kaopectate?

Effective at which?: Kaopectate basically is pepto bismol (bismuth subsalicylate). Both have bismuth salicylic acid which may have some antibacterial properties. Both are Aspirin products though and cannot be given to children or pregnant women or those otherwise intolerant of aspirin. Immodium does not treat the root cause of the diarrhea but has great stopping power. It wins. ...Read more

Could imodium (loperamide) slow stomach digestion?

Could imodium (loperamide) slow stomach digestion?

No: The acid that is produced in the stomach is in response to the food put in it. Immodium might slow the emptying of the food from the stomach, but it shouldn't affect the rate at which the proteins in the food is broken down by the protein enzymes in the stomach. The rest of the digestion occurs in the intestines, and immodium could slow down the movement of the food through the intestines. ...Read more

I’ve been having pink mucus diarrhea all day today. Is it something I should be concerned about or just take Imodium?

Rule out antibiotics: The mucus suggests coliitis. Are you taking antibiotics? If so you would be at risk for c diff colitis which needs specific treatment.

My child has gastroenteritis and diarrhea. Should I give him imodium(r)?

No...: The most likely cause of this is a virus and needs to clear out of the GI tract. The most important thing to do is to keep your child well hydrated. If he is able to drink fluids (don't worry about solid foods at this time), then keep giving him liquids. Also take note of his urine output - if he is not urinating and looks dry, unable to take fluids, then take him to the nearest er for IV fluid. ...Read more

Salmonella has given me bad diarrhea. Should I take imodium (loperamide)?

No: If you have diarrhea from salmonella, you can take clear liquids and a bland diet until the diarrhea resolves. You should not take imodium, (loperamide) as it will hold the bacteria in with the stool and cause your body to take extra time to clear it out of your system. If you develop fever, abdominal pain or blood in the stool you should see a doctor right away. ...Read more

Safe to stop: Imodium (loperamide) treats just the diarrhea itself, not what causes the diarrhea. After 4 days, not only is it safe to stop, it's probably recommended to stop to make sure that the underlying cause of the diarrhea has gotten better. ...Read more

How do I stop the constipation after taking imodium (loperamide) for diarrhea?

Diarrhea meds: Try not to take meds for diarrhea. Your body is trying to get rid of something - virus, bacteria or toxins and you do not want to keep them in. This is a temporary condition, fortunately. The Imodium (loperamide) will wear off. Meanwhile, drink 6-8 cups of fluid a day, plenty of fiber- fruits, vegetables, and exercise. For most people a bowel movement every 1-2 days is normal. ...Read more
