The blood is first filtered by the kidneys, and the composition of the resulting fluid is then altered depending on the body's needs. It is composed of mostly water, and breakdown products from blood cells impart ...Read more
It's possible: Hi. Odd question. It's possible to have a serum glucose over 200 with none in the urine, but the higher above 200 the serum glucose gets, the less likely none shows up in the urine. It has to do with the tubular threshold for glucose, which does show a bell-shaped curve distribution. ...Read more
I believed that diabetes was a lack of insulin which reduces blood sugar, so why isn't the blood sugar high rather than low?
What is it? I have poor blood sugar control and high blood pressure (hypertension). Cretanine was high too. Can sodium bicarbonate repair kidneys. thx
Not for you!: You need a good internist who will work you up and treat you appropriately. U say you have hi BP, hi Creatinine (prob. kidney damage). You don't want to take a sodium salt if your kidneys are sick. I don't know what other medical issues you have but you live near UCLA and Cedars-Sinai. Get a good internist there and get treated right, not by the quack who treated Michael Jackson! ...Read more
Counter regulation : When blood sugar drops, adrenalin, cortisol, growth hormone, glucagon, and other hormones kick in to increase blood sugar from body stores. Particularly if treating the low with food, this counter regulatory response to hypoglycemia can make blood sugar high afterwards. It can happen to some degree even without food. Over treating the low is usually the reason for very high sugars after a low. ...Read more

Maybe both: Aside from diabetes, there are other less common reasons to spill glucose in the urine. However, the bladder collects urine over several hours at which time a blood sugar may have been transiently elevated. Therefore, even if a blood sugar is normal at one point in time, urine represents hours of time. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers

Low threshhold: Ordinarily the kidney does not spill sugar into the urine until the blood level reaches about 180. However, if this kidney threshhold happens to be set at a much lower level, the sugar will begin to spill at a much lower level. This goes by the scientific name of renal glycosuria and has no relation to diabetes. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Is high blood sugars always a sign of diabetes? In other words an my high blood sugars be high and i don't have diabetes?
High sugars=diabetes: I hear you when you ask "do i really have diabetes?" but the definition of diabetes is elevated blood sugars. The cause of the elevated sugars is either the inability of Insulin to get your sugars out of the blood circulation into your cells -insulin resistance - or from failure of the pancreas to produce enough insulin. The elevated sugars can do damage so just use it as a life challenge. ...Read more
You : You are referring to a so called "sliding scale". That dose is worked out for each person taking Insulin who is using mealtime or fast acting Insulin like humalog, NovoLog or apidra (insulin glulisine). There are different ways of estimating the dose needed to lower your blood sugar a specified amount. If you take one of these insulins get guidance based upon your weight, blood sugars and total Insulin dose how much you might need. If you have not seen a certified diabetes educator, i urge you to do so. See the post website below for further guidance and information. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
