I'm pregnant and have food poisoning, should I go to the hospital?

I'm pregnant and have food poisoning, should I go to the hospital?

No: Although food poisoning can be miserable in general it will not hurt the fetus. Most cases can be managed at home and resolve in 24-48 hours. The key is to avoid dehydration. If you develop fever, have bloody diarrhea, have contractions or can not stay hydrated then yes you should be seen in the hospital.

Pregnancy (Definition)

When your due date arrives, you will be more than ready to have your baby! Most women deliver the baby somewhere between 37 and 42 weeks. According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, only 5% of babies arrive on the exact due date. Approximately 7% of babies are not delivered by 42 weeks, and when that happens, it is referred to ...Read more

What happens if someone comes to the hospital dehydrated w/ bad vomiting from food poisoning & antiemetics don't work to stop it? What do they do then?

What happens if someone comes to the hospital dehydrated w/ bad vomiting from food poisoning & antiemetics don't work to stop it? What do they do then?

Vomiting.: Typically they’d start with an examination supported by blood testing and a CT scan to confirm the mechanism of illness and potentially entertain other diagnoses. They’d likely administer IV fluids and IV antiemetic if appropriate based on their potential diagnoses. They’d then to from there to try to diagnose and treat.

I ended up in hospital following what we thought was food poisoning but now I am bleeding heavily, could I have been pregnant?

I ended up in hospital following what we thought was food poisoning but now I am bleeding heavily, could I have been pregnant?

Anything possible: Without seeing and examining you it is not possible to respond intelligently to the question. If the bleeding continues however would definitely recommend your seeing a doctor, not only to be sure there is nothing going on in your uterus, but to assess the possibility you are becoming anemic. Hope this helps.

Anxiety about all these stories of food poisoning & being in the hospital, I think I have had it for a week now but I only get stomach/headaches now.

DRINK WATER!: Do you mean getting food poisoning and ending up in the hospital because of it? Usually food poisoning is self limiting, lasting 24-72 hours at most. The biggest concern is hydration status. If you can't keep liquids in, you will become very dehydrated and this is when we would hospitalize for IV hydration and electrolyte replacement. If you are feeling better you probably don't need hospitalization.

After weeks of food poisoning I still feel like I'm going to throw up, what to do?

After weeks of food poisoning I still feel like I'm going to throw up, what to do?

Should not last week: Food poisoning should NOT last weeks! If you are still having symptoms, there is probably something else going on and you should see your doctor or a gastroenterologist, have your stool checked (especially for C.diff), and possibly get scoped (endoscopy and colonoscopy).

Can food poisoning cause an intestinal blockage? This happened 3 years ago and I had an illeostomy and I'm going back in a few days for reversal surge

Can food poisoning cause an intestinal blockage? This happened 3 years ago and I had an illeostomy and I'm going back in a few days for reversal surge

Intestinal blockage: Food poisoning characteristically causes nausea, vomiting and diarrhea but not intestinal obstruction. The latter is caused by tumor, chronic scarring from diverticulitis of the colon or by intestinal adhesions. Less common causes are intersusception, incarcerated hernia, or volvulus. Your surgeon is best qualified to tell you the cause of your obstruction and need for temporary colostomy.

I ate a little bit of tuna salad last night and I'm still burping it up tonight. I have food poisoning. Is this normal? What should I do?

I ate a little bit of tuna salad last night and I'm still burping it up tonight. I have food poisoning. Is this normal? What should I do?

Very mild case: Sounds like it could be from mayonnaise. If there's only burping and no vomiting or diarreha then you'll be ok. Consume clear liquids, saltine crackers no fiber.

HI. I threw up undigested food I ate 12 hours earlier. I woke up nauseous. Could it be food poisoning or gastroparesis (does it come and go)?

HI. I threw up undigested food I ate 12 hours earlier. I woke up nauseous. Could it be food poisoning or gastroparesis (does it come and go)?

Indigestion: More than likely it was plain indigestion of food in your stomach when you went to bed. We reserve the diagnosis of gastroparesis for chronic difficulties of stomach emptying. Food poisoning is also a possibility but diarrhea usually follows. Your symptoms Either way should resolve without specific treatment but if symptoms persist or worsen, see your physician for evaluation.

Can wasabi peas go bad and cause food poisoning? Ate some for first time ever, already were sitting in cupboard for while. Felt flu-ish next few days

Not food poisoning: Dried foods like wasabi peas are an unlikely cause of food poisoning, and "flu-ish" symptoms don't suggest it. The main symptoms of food poisoning are gastrointestinal -- nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, etc. And food poison symptoms generally clear up on their own within 1-2 days. Almost certainly your symptoms have nothing to do with the wasabi peas. See a doctor if they continue or become severe.

Do you think I should go to the doctor for food poisoning?

No MD needed: No, food poisoning should subside by itself. Make sure you drink clear liquids to hydrate your body. If the diarrhea doesn't subside within 7 days, see a doctor.

How do I tell differences between morning sickness and food poisoning? I'm 10 week pregnant

How do I tell differences between morning sickness and food poisoning? I'm 10 week pregnant

Might not matter...: What I mean is, if you have severe enough vomiting or diarrhea, either way you need to be seen and treated, possibly with IV fluids. If your symptoms are less concerning, then I would say the best way to distinguish is that pregnancy usually only causes mild to moderate nausea and occasional vomiting. Whereas food poisonings are often going to be more of a diarrheal illness.

I had a burger earlier and now I feel sick. I'm worried about food poisoning. Should I take zofran (ondansetron)?

I had a burger earlier and now I feel sick. I'm worried about food poisoning. Should I take zofran (ondansetron)?

Sure. U can try this: If no improvement or you have diarrhea, fever and or severe abdominal pain, then you will need to be seen to R/o E.coli infection. If your symptoms get better with zofran, (ondansetron) but have recurrent attacks with greasy meals, then you need to have work up done to R/ o gall bladder disease. Will need gall bladder US and or HIDA scan with CCK.

I just took 30mg of Amytriptaline and I have food poisoning so I took 2mg Zofran (ondansetron) and saw there was a major integration and now I'm scared. Is it ok?

Not a problem: This interaction is that the zofran (ondansetron) could increase the serotonin effects of the Amitriptyline resulting in serotonin syndrome. This will not happen if you only took one dose of the zofran (ondansetron) and your dose of Amitriptyline is only 30 mg. Do not worry but do not take more zofran (ondansetron) while on the Amitriptyline.
