Ileoanal Reservoir (Overview)

An ileoanal reservoir is surgically created pouch to hold stool in a person who has had his colon (large intestine) removed, but still has a healthy anus. The surgeon creates the pouch from the last several inches of the ileum (small intestine). Stool collects in the ileoanal reservoir and then is pooped out through the anus during a bowel movement.

Maybe: It depends on whether or not the rectum was removed or not. There's no reason to think you have a sphincter problem, and if that's true, along with the presence of the rectum, you may be able to get reversed. Fairly normal: These can all be common and benign findings. Grade 1 are tiny hemorrhoid veins located at the anal opening & needs no treatment. Hypertrophied papillae means enlarged skin structures at the anal opening that need no treatment. Tortuos colon just means there are extra turns in the colon & no treatment. Avoid constipation. Eat more fiber. See your GI doctor for follow up. ...Read more
