Persistent Cough: If you have underlying asthma a common cold or viral URI can definitely cause an exacerbation leading to persistent cough. There are other reasons for persistent cough as well including pneumonia or post-viral cough that can persist for weeks. Follow up with primary doctor for further evaluation and treatment. See your doctor: A chest x-ray is usually a good idea for persistent cough, and its probably going to be normal. Three most common causes of the cough you describe are post-nasal drip, acid reflux, and asthma. Yours sounds like post-nasal drip. Over the counter decongestants can help if that is the case, but limit their use to a week or so. Sometimes an inhaled steroid helps, but this can take weeks to work. ...Read more

Possible reflux: Try some Prilosec or zantac (ranitidine). You may be suffering from reflux which will need a trial of treatment you should try a low acid diet. Look it up on the internet. Good luck. You will need to use the Prilosec 20 mg twice a day. Taken one hr before breakfast and supper on an empty stomach. Nothing else is taken with this med except for thyroid meds.
