I am 6 week pregnant. I use lip balm containing 1% octinoxate. I might absorb it when eating. Heard it produce estrogen effect. Will it hurt my baby?

I'd stop using it, : As it absorbed & does have an estrogen effect. The concentration that can cause a problem in humans is unknown. Check your sunscreens, as well. Octinoxate is not stable in sunlight. So there are probably better & safer options. It's not recommended for pregnant women or children. Since you used it on a small surface area, it probably did no harm. ...Read more

My pediatrician said my babies head is big. She's 7 months. Her body is small. Underweight. She is aware and reflexes are great. She is aware Family has big heads. She eats well too. I am just concerned.

My pediatrician said my babies head is big. She's 7 months. Her body is small. Underweight. She is aware and reflexes are great. She is aware Family has big heads. She eats well too. I am just concerned.

It happens: A common reason for a big head is heredity & I often measure parents heads in the office. But in babies we follow many such areas with concern because a big head could mean big problems too. In a kid with under nutrition the head would tend to grow normally while the body remains small. Sounds like the doc is doing their job. ...Read more

Food for a 9-month-old infant?

Food in infant: After 4 months of age it is safe to introduce all foods into an infant diet, but there are caveats. Only 1-2 new foods per week, and slowly at that to ensure no adverse reactions. Breast feeding is still recommended as 1st for first 4-6 months. If the child has eczema, there is a higher rate of food hypersensitivity. If unsure, speak with an allergist. ...Read more

Can a 9-month-old infant eat tuna?

Can a 9-month-old infant eat tuna?

Yes, but...: In a healthy 9-month-old no food, including tuna, needs to be delayed to reduce allergies (in fact, feeding may reduce allergies). Great omega-3s in tuna, but watch out for accumulating mercury, especially during first 3 years. Wild salmon is a better first fish. If choose tuna: small, infrequent portions. And 'light' tuna better than 'white'. Some brands have lower mercury (smaller fish) options. ...Read more

When can babies eat baby food in general?

When can babies eat baby food in general?

4-6 months of age: Generally we prefer to wait until the infant is older before starting solids. Everything they need nutritionally is in breast milk or formula. When starting, begin with baby cereal and then move onto green/yellow veges. Avoid fruits for a while as the tastebuds of an infant are very keen on sweets. Fruit intro before veges may lead to the child resisting the veges. ...Read more

When are you able to feed baby food to babies?

Delay until 6mo: Solid foods were once used to make up for deficiencies in home made milk formula used in the 50s to 80s. A return to breast FDG & modern formulas changed the value of solids from nutrition, to a pathway to teach baby to eat & transition to table foods. Waiting until 6m allows baby to sit & participate in a feeding, much as the will when older. Start with a few tablespoons as a paste. ...Read more

What age do you start feeding babies baby food?

I wait until sitting: Studies of various populations show that breast milk alone supplies balanced nutrition for the first year +. Most early solid feeding pressure comes from the days babies were fed home made blends of boiled cow milk/karo & vitamins. At the time early supplements made sense, now they are overdone. Starting should focus on training baby to sit up & eat in preparation for his/her position at the table. ...Read more

Not necessary early: During the 50s & 60s when moms made their own cow milk based formula, it was important to feed solids to make up for the deficiencies of cow milk. Today the breast or commercial formula fed babies need no solids the first year. We have a need to teach them the different skills needed to feed solids & most are ready @ 6m when they start sitting with assistance. This is a good time to start. ...Read more
