First TSH levels were 6.8, 1 week later are 3.1. Not on thyroid medication. Have many symptoms of hypothyroid incl. Chronic hives. What causes this?

If you're hyperthyroid and on methimazole or PTU, (propylthiouracil) if you stop hyperthyroidism may return. If you're on l-thyroxine and you stop, hypothyroidism will return. What thyroid med?: Depends on the thyroid med. If your thyroid is normal, and you took a moderate dose of levothyroxine, your thyroid would shut down and you would not get hyper since the hormone replacement takes over. A normal thyroid would then recover if you stopped the drug. If you took methimazole, it would probably make you hypothyroid.
