If my baby has a lot of bloody diarrhea should I take him to the er?

If my baby has a lot of bloody diarrhea should I take him to the er?

Yes: Unarguably bloody diarrhea is not normal. Most pediatricians would prefer to evaluate this situation in the office first. While frightening, rarely does does bloody diarrhea require hospital admission. A small amount of blood mixed into a large portion of watery stool can suggest more blood than it actually is. However, if this occurs during non-office hours, then the baby should go to the er. ...Read more

Fevers : Fevers for the most part aren't dangerous and are just the body's natural reaction to fighting off an infection. Most of these infections are viral and may be accompanied by runny nose, sore throat, congestion, mild rash, or nothing at all. Since fevers aren't dangerous, we usually treat the fever with Acetaminophen or Ibuprofen just to make the child more comfortable as their body fights the illness. "red flags" that we look for with fever to indicate something more serious is going on are: -fevers that last 5 days or more -fevers persistently above 104f orally -a child that acts very sick - very irritable or difficult to wake -difficulty breathing -vomiting, diarrhea, refusal to drink, or dehydration -a purple rash, esp on the legs -stiff neck -any complaints of pain such as the ear, throat, stomach or a joint i am more concerned about his rapid breathing and vomiting than the fever. With pneumonia, you should start to see an improvement after 48 hours of antibiotics. If he is the same or worsening, then you should take him back in. Good luck! ...Read more

Better safe: Although, most likely your baby didn't suffer anything serious, i'd be safe than sorry in case there may be something to miss with a naked eye. Vomiting is a sign of brain concussion in adults and you would not expect an 18 month old to vomit without a reason either, so i'd take the baby to the doctor. ...Read more

My daughter is 8 1/2 month she is having a fever of 102.8 how much tyenol should I give her or should I just take her to the emergency?

I : I assume that since you are giving your son breathing treatments that he has asthma. Asthma attacks can have various triggers such as respiratory illnesses, allergies, pollution including cigarette smoke and perfume, very cold or hot air, and strenuous exercise. Giving albuterol whether through a nebulizer or inhaler is the first thing you should do for wheezing and respiratory distress. If the treatment is not working or if the child seems to need a treatment sooner than every 4 hours, this is a sign that they may need additional medications such as oral steroids and/or stronger albuterol treatments in an office or hospital setting. You should call your child's doctor and have him seen if it's during clinic hours or take him into the emergency room for evaluation. My 18 month old has a rash with runny nose. I have given him benadryl, (diphenhydramine) what could it be and should I take him to the doctor? He also has diarrhea.

Viral infection?: Good morning, rash, runny nose, and diarrhea are usually caused by a viral infection at this age. Most of these infections are self-limited and should get better with adjusting food - fluids such as pedialyte. Watch for any sign of dehydration such as dry tongue and sick-look. If the child looks, it needs to be seen by a doctor. Rash usually does not require any treatment. ...Read more

My 6yo has had a fever 100-103 up and down for 3 days. He also has minor ear pain and now diarrhea. Should i take him to the ER or wait for his dr?

Depends on variables: I dislike the er as a collection of trauma, heart attacks and the like, where kids are often shuffled into the back and seen by someone looking for a major problem.Earaches while painful are probably better assessed by someone you know who won't just put the kid on an antibiotic he may not need to get you out the door. Ibuprofen and a heating pad to cuddle with can often get them through the night. ...Read more
