If I recently broke my leg is it safe for me to travel on an airplane?

If I recently broke my leg is it safe for me to travel on an airplane?

Maybe: Check with your doctor how to manage all medical issues including swelling of your leg, increased risk of blood clots, and mobility options. Call the airline and talk to the medical advice desk (meda) too. When flying the leg can swell, many airlines require the cast be cut almost in half to address this. A bulkhead seat will be far more comfortable. Arrive extra early and expect delays. ...Read more

Is it possible for me to use an icepack on my head if I have a fever?

Is it possible for me to use an icepack on my head if I have a fever?

Icepacks over do it: I don't think it's really a good idea to apply an ice-pack to your head for a fever. That won't really do anything except make you feel uncomfortable. A fever is part of the body's way of fighting an infection - so my advice is not to interfere. If it's really bothering you, you might want to try other strategies like a Tylenol (acetaminophen) or ibuprofen. Sure you could go for the ice pack, if you really want. ...Read more

If : If a patient has a fall and has pain in the knee, with swelling present, then an x-ray may be indicated to determine if there is a fracture. If the pain is persistent, then a cartilaginous or ligamentous cause must be considered as a possibility. Using advil (ibuprofen) and an ace wrap, along with ice and elevation, are reasonable but if the pain persists then a medical evaluation is reasonable. ...Read more

Gentle wean: Hydrocodone & oxycodone aren't good long term on the liver. When was the last time your liver function (LFTs) were checked? Knowing what this # is is helpful with determining what 6 years of ingestion has done to your liver. A gentle wean over 5-6 months (cut out a dose each month) is probably what you'll need in order to come off of these without withdrawal issues. It is quite do-able. ...Read more

I : I recommend that you let your parents know what has happened. I recommend that you be seen by a medical provider to determine the extent of damage to your ankle. In the mean time, rest your foot and ankle, . Your parents can provide you with a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication like motrin, or if they don't have this type of medication, tylenol (acetaminophen) can help the pain. It would be helpful for you to elevate your foot. Prop it up on soft pillows to help prevent swelling. Icing it can also help. Do you have a bag of frozen peas or corn in your fridge - this can be used without cutting open the bag. Can put on your ankle for 15 minutes several times a day. A light bandage can be used for gentle (never overly tight) compression. I recommend that you get your parent's help with this. ...Read more

If I have a pneumatic splint for my leg, is it safe to use on a trans-atlantic flight?

If I have a pneumatic splint for my leg, is it safe to use on a trans-atlantic flight?

No: The most common complication of prolonged flights, aside from uri's, is deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in the lower extremity from prolonged immobility of limbs and sitting in cramped seats for long periods. Moving legs constricts veins and helps flow, preventing dvt. Splinting the leg prevents doing the things that can prevent dvt. Drink lots of water, move legs frequently, do not fly splinted. ...Read more

Don't : Don't recommend leaving a possible fracture of the forearm unattended. It needs to be determined if there is any neurovascular compromise. Additionally, depending on the site of a fracture need to determine that there is proper bony alignment for healing. Also need to check for tendon or ligament damage. The doctor would like take a medical history, physically examine the extremity and take an x -ray. Depending on findings there could be a splint, soft cast or cast. ...Read more

I left my makeup(liquid foundation) in the car for a couple weeks. Will it cause me to breakout if I use it again?

I left my makeup(liquid foundation) in the car for a couple weeks. Will it cause me to breakout if I use it again?

No easy/clear answer: All depends on the molecules within the makeup, routinely proprietary formulas with a huge number of molecules without any requirement for research data on health/disease responses; exempted by DSHEA Act of 1994. Thus depends on how heat/oxygen in air might have altered the formulation & only trial & error (as in drug trials) to discover how you might respond differently. ...Read more

I have edema and petechiae on my feet after a give hour flight -- is it safe to fly again?

I have edema and petechiae on my feet after a give hour flight -- is it safe to fly again?

Flight health issues: Flying, esp. for long times, can be quite taxing. If u notice swelling of the feet and ankles, this means ur circulation was not very good while u were stationary for all that time. Best to get an aisle seat and get up and down the aisles every hour. If you have a middle seat, try ankle/foot lifts to 'pump' blood through those areas. Petechiae might mean something more tho- u should get it checked ...Read more

Hi every year I fly to new mexico to see family and I have a baby on the way he/she will be 4 month and I was wondering if it can hurt the baby at all?

Hi every year I fly to new mexico to see family and I have a baby on the way he/she will be 4 month and I was wondering if it can hurt the baby at all?

Not at all: Keep up her regular food and sleep schedule if possible, and try to fly after her second set of shots, usually at 4 months. She will be well protected. It is safest for her to fly strapped in a car seat, but the only way to be sure of that is to buy her a ticket, which not everyone can afford; instead, try to pick a flight which is not full and use the seat as your carryon. Use bottled water. ...Read more

I had a blood clot in leg that broke away to lung. i stayed in hospital for 4 and 1/2 days. i want to know if it's okay to exercise a bit?

Depends: While there are no specific guidelines for when to resume the exercise, it depends on the amount of clot in the lungs and the legs (clot burden), how are your symptoms, and type of exercise you are talking about. Basic idea is not to exert yourself to aggravate the lung function when the clot is fresh, and not to let the fresh clot in the leg to move to the lungs. Light exercises Ok if tolerated. ...Read more
