Antibiotics at home: is the best "home remedy" for UTIs. Drinking lots of water can help a lot. Constipation needs 2B treated as it can both cause & prolong UTIs. Persistent UTI or No: For a UTI in a young woman, a short course of antibiotics should get rid of the infection. However, post-uti swelling can cause ongoing discomfort. Like a bruise after trauma, it will take time for the inflammation to go away; in the meantime, increase h2o, reduce caffeine/alcohol intake and avoid spicy/acidic foods to reduce irritation. Go see ur FamilyDoc: I'm not aware that different antibiotics lead to different urine smells. Perhaps you've eaten something out of ordinary like asparagus which is known to cause pungent odor. If still worried because of history of urinary tract infections, go see your Family Doc for testing. But without painful frequent urination w/urgency, we're not very suspicious for UTI.
