Recurrent Hernia: Recurrent hernias may occur in ~2-5% of cases following initial hernia repair. Operative repair is usually very straightforward, typically requiring mesh placement, depending on the location/type of hernia and patient-factors. ...Read more

I had hernia repair surgery on the 11th my stomach was nice and soft but now its hard as rock again in the same spot the hernia was?

Probably normal: It is common to have a firm area under the incision. This is called the healing ridge, and is due to the proliferative phase of wound healing. Will go away in several weeks. Be sure to see your surgeon for a post operative visit. Hope this helps! ...Read more

What is the difference between a hernia and a weak spot?

What is the difference between a hernia and a weak spot?

Hernia is weak spot: A hernia is a "weak spot" found where there is an opening in the middle of muscle tissues, allowing abdominal contents to pass through. The danger is that they may get stuck or "strangulated." in medical terms we call that "incarcerated." either way the concern is that the involved segment of bowel or omentum gets caught and loses its blood supply. This can be an emergency. See a doctor. ...Read more

What is the difference between a weak spot in the abdomen wall and a hernia?

What is the difference between a weak spot in the abdomen wall and a hernia?

Spectrum of disease: A hernia is a hole in the abdominal wall through which intra abdominal contents can protrude, and appear as a lump under the skin. These holes sometimes start out with a thinning of the muscles, which is more typical for inguinal (groin) hernia. The weakness does not allow passage of abdominal contents, thus is not dangerous. It may however be a precursor for a hernia. ...Read more
