Is advil (ibuprofen) needed ?: Long term use, even every other day, esp. when older, can lead to kidney issues. So the question is Advil offering a discernible benefit as you have Oxy. If the answer is no, then stop Advil as it's also requiring use of Prevacid (lansoprazole) which will not minimize renal risk. Since many take NSAIDs for arthritic pain there are topical options including Lidocaine. Voltaren, however is a topical NSAID option ...Read more

Can somebody tell me how much ibuprofen does it take to cause kidney damage?

Can somebody tell me how much ibuprofen does it take to cause kidney damage?

How much Ibuprofen?: The answer to your question depends on how old the person taking Ibuprofen (i) is, what drugs that are being taken and how many i pills are being taken. Patients with diuretic (d) use are more apt to get acute renal failure (a) than those not taking a d. Likewise, older patients are more prone to develop a than younger ones. The good news is that any a caused by i goes away once the i is stopped. ...Read more

Can taking Advil (ibuprofen) daily cause kidney damage or liver damage?

Can taking Advil (ibuprofen) daily cause kidney damage or liver damage?

Yes, but unlikely: Advil (ibuprofen) is a non-steroid anti-inflammatory drug. All nsaids have the potential to cause kidney injury (nephrotoxicity) and elevated liver enzymes (hepatoxicity). Both would be uncommon if used as prescribed in a healthy person, more concerning would be the risk of stomach bleeding. At your age, you should work with your pt to resolve the pain to be able to stop taking nsaids in the long run. ...Read more

Back pain: Tyler

Although I cannot tell you what your back pain is from, I can tell you that kidney damage from anti inflammatory rx such as advil (ibuprofen) is painless. If you take advil (ibuprofen) on a daily basis, it is reasonable to have blood work checked through your md 1-2 x a year. ...Read more

What are the real risks of giving acetaminophen/ibuprofen for teething in terms of liver or kidney damage? How much is too much? 12 month old.

What are the real risks of giving acetaminophen/ibuprofen for teething in terms of liver or kidney damage? How much is too much? 12 month old.

Short term: The key here is to use these medicines in the short term and only for specific reasons. In 20 years of medical practice I have never seen liver or kidney failure from parents judiciously using these medicines. Acetaminophen affects liver. Ibuprofen affects kidney. Use for a baby who is in pain or severe discomfort with a fever or earache, not "as a preventive" or "just in case". ...Read more

Had CT with contrast this morning. Now my mid back is achy. Worried of kidney damage. Chances and symptoms? Anything I can do to help

No worries: We do a good job these days screening patients' kidney function before we give contrasts. Chance of the one dye administration causing kidney issues is very low and would not cause you back pain anyway. Your pain is probably musculoskeletal from laying on the test table. Avoid taking any NSAIDS for the pain but can use Tylenol (acetaminophen) and stay well hydrated. ...Read more
