I was walking in really cold weather and got breathing difficulties? Walking pneumonia?

Non specific: One who gets short of breath from anything find it harder to breath in the cold. Patients with heart disease may find walking in cold weather puts more stress on the heart and get short of breath or chest pain. Patients with asthma or COPD may get more short of breath in the cold as cold air can trigger bronchospasm ( airway narrowing) & get short of breath. I was gorge walking Thursday (walking in rivers climbing rocks and jumping from heights) and I hit my knee on a rock and pulled two muscles should I get crutches?

How bad is pain?: Crutches are used when you have an unstable injury (broken bone/ligament injury) and to help pain. Without an exam it's hard to say what you need; but without fracture or internal derangement of knee ligaments I tell patients who use crutches to do "toe touch weight bearing". In other words put as much weight on hurt leg as you comfortably can while walking on crutches to speed healing. ...Read more

I have recently started playing sport again after 7 years football (soccer). I have serious leg pain in my calfs and knees while running. What do I do?

Take it slow: Be sure you stretch often and a lot before any exercise. Take it slowly since you have not been physically active for seven years. If the pain is not improving with rest, stretching before exercise/activity, and even trying some otc nsaids to decrease inflammation, then seek a medical exam. Best wishes. ...Read more

My right knee has been bothering me since Sat. Hurts to go up&downstairs. I did alot of walking and climbing stairs this past week. Some advice please?

RICE: Hard to be sure without knowing where it hurts and examining you. In general a brief trial of Rest Immobilization Compression and Elevation may help. Don't overdo any of these but you can use cold packs or a bottle of cold water and a gently wrapped 4-6" Ace as a form of first aid treatment. Will probably subside but you can add Alleve or Motrin if you don't have stomach problems. ...Read more

See an exercise phys: You cannot calculate calories burned solely from time walked. You also need information on speed and terrain. An exercise physiologist is trained to work out both what an exercise is doing and what exercise is appropriate for you. ...Read more

Was told my 3year old had chronic sinusitis but i didn't feel he did. Went back to find its walking pneumonia. But fever won't go down. Whatshould do?

CF screening/treat: If he has chronic sinus symptoms and pneumonia with continued fever, he should be re evaluated. Your physician may order a chest radiograph to determine if he has pneumonia. In addition, they may check his white cell count and CRP prior to ordering an antibiotic. Rinsing the sinuses with saline also helps to keep the passages clear. He should also be screened for CF, a genetic lung disease. ...Read more

Leg was asleep and I was passed out, smoke alarm went off and startled me so I stood up, now my left foot hurts when I walk. Pinched nerve?

Need clarification: When you said passed out did you mean you were unconscious or were you deeply asleep? If you fell unconscious, you may have had a seizure or a mild stroke, if this is the case you should see your doctor for further evaluation, if you were simply deeply asleep , you may had stayed too long on one position which decrease circulation to that leg and felt a tingling sensation after you woke up. ...Read more

I haven't walked in a while but when I walked two miles, I felt very winded. How can I start back walking wthout feeling like im having a heart attack?

Walking: I think your body is just trying to tell you to go a little slower. That is, reduce your initial efforts to just half a mile for several weeks, after a few weeks, increase to a mile, after another month or two try a mile and a half, and so on. Unless your health conditions are not adquately uncontrolled, you should be able to build up this way. Your body likes to have time to adapt. ...Read more
