I stepped on a nail last night. It wasn't rusty. It only went in an inch or two. I cleaned it right after. Could I have tetanus?

Puncture wounds: Can be particularly worrisome regarding infection. An inch or two is actually pretty deep. If you haven't had a tetanus shot in the last ten years - that is a must. I would encourage you to have this medically addressed. ...Read more

I stepped on a nail yesterday but it never went through my skin or brought any blood. I had a tetanus five years ago should I get another?

I stepped on a nail yesterday but it never went through my skin or brought any blood. I had a tetanus five years ago should I get another?

Yes and No: Yes, get a Tdap shot if a person is an adult and hasn't gotten a Tdap shot in the last 10 years, regardless of yesterday's nail incident. No, if the tetanus shot 5 years ago was of the Tdap type, because a tetanus booster is not needed if the nail "never went through my skin". Also, a new recommendation this year is for pregnant women to get a Tdap shot with EACH pregnancy. ...Read more

I stepped on a nail and have a puncture wound. Tetanus is good and I cleaned it. Any way to speed healing? I am training for a physical event...

Punctured wound: Development of an infection is greatest concern and will depend on how deep the nail got. If shallow, rate of infection should be almost minimal. If deep, surface cleaning make not be enough to prevent bacterial infection. Close observation of the wound for redness, pain and tenderness is prudent and if present later, have your physician prescribe antibiotics. If there is pus, have md do a culture. ...Read more

A friend wants to know if she stepped on a nail and didn't get cut and it didn't go in her foot if she still needs a tetanus shot?

No: The skin must be punctured completely to force the clostridium tetani bacteria through to underlying tissues order to cause tetanus. A scrape won't introduce it, as well. If you do get a skin puncture, try to make the wound bleed to help get rid of any foreign matter that might have been introduced. If it is red and painful the next day, seek immediate treatment, even after your booster. ...Read more

Yesterday I stepped on a little nail? Probably went in less than 1/4 inch, and looks fine now. Should I get a tetanus booster?

Depends: The depth of the injury means more for the potential germs planted inside than the issue of tetanus. Cleaning the wound quickly with soap & water is the best initial action. Even a superficial scratch can allow the tetanus spores to set up in your body & cause tetanus. How long do you have before you step on a nail or something to get a tetanus shot, what if you can't get one for a few hours after the incident?

Varies: We encourage the injection within 24-48 hours. Good wound cleaning as soon as possible after the injury helps prevent a wound infection by any germ with or without tetanus spores that may be there. If you've had the primary series and your last booster was within 10 years, the shot is optional but a good decision because you can boost your protection for another decade. ...Read more
