I slammed my finger in a door. What can I do to save my nail? Will it regrow fast?

Nail injury: Most likely the injury you sustained damaged the attachment of the nail to the nail bed. If there was no damage to the nail matrix then your nail should eventually grow out and appear normal over time. However, once the damage was done there is nothing you can do to "save" the nail other than wait patiently. ...Read more

I slammed my finger in a door on accidently. Now it is black and blue. And a little pressure how will I know if I need a hole in my nail? Looks wise.

Nail bruised?: If the nail is black and blue, it means you have a bruise/blood collection under the nail. Piercing the nail will allow the blood to evacuate, and will relieve the pressure. However, you should see your doctor, as he can anesthetize your finger first if it is needed. If the finger is broken, you should be seen as well. ...Read more

I accidentally hit slammed my finger on a door and now there's a red/dark red little thing near my finger nail. Is it just a bruise?

Blood under the: Nail plate can look like a small dark spot/area. Usually itis just a bruise or a small tiny laceration to the strucutres under the nail, on occasion it can occur with a fracture, but a severe fracture usally has deformity or the nail is cracked or lifted off or the area of darkness is larger. If there is no trauma then that is different and needs eval. Do not try ot drain or evacuate the spot. ...Read more

If you slam your finger in a door and your nail falls off how long will it take till the new one grows?

If you slam your finger in a door and your nail falls off how long will it take till the new one grows?

Trauma: If you're lucky enough to still have some living matrix at the end of the finger, and most times this occurs you definitely are that lucky, the nail should grow back in a matter of many months. It just takes a long time because that nail, once established, only grows 2 mm a month on the fingers and 1 mm a month on the toes. ...Read more

Smashed my finger in a door and bruised it like a month ago. The bruise takes up almost my entire nail. The nail has not grown since. Is this bad?

Possibly: Is there coagulated blood at the base of the nail or lunula? (part nearest the skin and closest to the wrist)? Does it still hurt to press on the nail? You could have a hematoma pressing on the lunula, cutting off blood flow. The lunula is the part of the nail that grows. Without good blood flow it may not grow. Smashed finger nail in iron door. Black nail right away. Finger sensitive painful and others fingers feel weird but they weren't smashed.

Finger pain: You probably have a subungual hematoma where there is blood under the nail which appears black. If you don't have a fine hole drilled through the nail quickly it will lift the nail off of the nail plate and you will lose the entire nail. If you feel uncomfortable doing it, go to the ER. The other fingers were probably just bruised. Good luck! ...Read more

I pinched my finger tip in between a car door there was blood, the nail is black, my finger tip is swollen, the pain is really bad. What happens now?

Visit MD: 23 year old lady who slammed finger in car door.
You should visit the ER to make sure your finger is neurovascularly intact meaning there is blood flow to the finger and the nerves are functioning. You may require some x rays of your hand to make sure you did not fracture one of your phalanges. You also may need a tetanus shot. The subungual hematoma should be drained as well. Good luck. Apply ice. ...Read more

Both could be right.: Trauma to the nail root can either temporarily or permanently cause a distortion of the nail plate. This distortion can often mimic a fungal nail infection. Having a fingernail that has a fungal infection is not as common as a toenail, especially on a 23 year old. You can settle the dilemma by having the nail tested for fungal spores. ...Read more

Before I jammed my finger from a car door and I'm not sure my nail will come back to normal, because I still see a little blood under the nail.

Don't worry. It will: When you jamm your nail or get it injured, the nail will slowly become loose and eventually come out.

But worry not, the new one is already in the making and slowly it will replace the otherwise dead nail. The blood that you are seeing inside the nail may need to come out, if it is causing pain. Otherwise the nail will be replaced by a new one in due course of time. ...Read more

Will the nail grow back if I put a bandaid on my finger after the nail was ripped off?

Sure: Covering the nailbed with a band-aid will not affect eventual regrowth one way or another. The only way it won't regrow is if you damaged the deep cuticle, and a traumatic avulsion rarely does that. So keep the wounded nailbed clean and if you want to, you can use a covering such as a band-aid without fear of further harm. By the way, ouch! ...Read more
