You need testing: Testing for hepatitis antigens and antibodies will tell you you're status. Hepatitis b and e are spread by contact with infected blood so unless your mother had the infection before you were born it is unlikely that she would have infected you. ...Read more

Varies but not long: How long some one lives with stage IV liver cancer( hepatocellular cancer and not metastatic from other primary site) depends on the aggressiveness of the cancer and how well she is functioning. Tough to answer: Sorry to hear it. If she is in good shape she might still be able to have surgery. If not there are some other procedures that might be beneficial. Some centers are looking at targeted radiation treatment. Her survival depends on how advanced her cancer is, and how kind the aging process has been to her. ...Read more

Not related: Smoking does not really contribute to developing cirrhosis, and as far as I know, doesn't alter its course. It can itself cause other problems which may shorten life, and nicotine may have drug interactions with some of the medications used to treat cirrhosis. If your mother drinks alcohol, she must stop. Higher cancer risk: she really should try to stop. in a cirrhotic, 4 fold higher risk of liver cancer in smokers. sounds like you might be a great support for her. ...Read more
