I Just Had Meniscus Repair Surgery How Long Until I Can Walk On It
After few days: Patients are given crutches, and instructed to walk with the crutches. Most often, patients will be allowed to place weight on the operated leg so long as the knee is held fully straight (either with a knee immobilizer or a hinged knee brace locked in extension). ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Your doctor may also suggest a safe exercise plan. Walking is usually the easiest type of exercise, but swimming or other low-impact exercises can work just as well. Exercise is an important way to keep blood sugar in control, and physical activity in pregnancy has been found to decrease the risk ...Read more
It depends: Depending on the type of repair, your surgeon may protect your weightbearing and your activities to maximize healing. If part of the torn meniscus was removed, you would be allowed to walk as soon as you feel able. However, if the torn meniscus was repaired with sutures, then you might need to use crutches (partial weightbearing) for 4-6 weeks and gradually resume walking. Check with the doc. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
No definite answer: Meniscus tears that are repairable should be repaired as expeditiously as possible. No one can know for certain when or if another injury will occur. Further injury may convert a repairable tear to a tear that cannot be repaired but only partially removed. While waiting for a likely repair, it is prudent to greatly limit any activities that put the knee and meniscus at risk for further injury. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

Crutches for 6 weeks: Most meniscal repair surgeries, whether done open or arthroscopically, require up to 6 weeks of limited weight bearing with crutches. Most surgeons allow at least the weight of the foot to touch the ground during that time. Physical therapy is geared at working on quadriceps function/strength and limited knee motion from 0-90 degrees. Bracing in extension for ambulation may be indicated as well. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

Ask surgeon: This question depends on several things: 1) surgical technique, 2) meniscal status, 3) quad control. 4) pain, 5) swelling. Your therapist and surgeon will be able to help you figure out what is best for you. Note that any meniscal repair may slow your ability to put weight on your leg to protect the repair, but is worth it in the long run (prevent arthritis). Hope this helps. ...Read more

I'm 20yrs old guy, after meniscus repair surgery & rehab. After 1 year can I be back to my high intensity exercises or should I stop them permanently?
Variable: That depends on a number of factors: 1) allograft or autograft - when using your own tendon (either patellar tendon or hamstring tendon), the donor site (where we get the tendon) typically hurts more than the acl reconstruction. 2) type of acl reconstruction - some surgeons are performing "all-inside" acl reconstructions that have significantly less surgical pain, 3) individual pain tolerance. ...Read more
In due time...: I have my patients wear a brace until 6-9 weeks postop. While many patients are able to put partial weight on the leg w/ the aid of crutches, it is not unusual for them to feel weakness/ pain @ 4 wks that prevent them from fully walking on their own. You should discuss specifics with your physical therapist/ surgeon as each protocol varies slightly. ...Read more

How soon can be i can start pt after meniscus repair arthroscopic surgery. What can I do as exercise, and and diet plan.
Surgeon Decision: Physical therapy after surgery should always be guided by the surgeon. In general meniscal repair is a much slower rehab process than partial meniscectomy but at age 22 it would be beneficial to preserve as much as your meniscus as possible so it would be worth the extra rehab if your surgeon thinks your meniscus would heal if it is repaired. In any case pick a good surgeon and trust him/her. ...Read more
X-ray and MRI show significant hole in back of kneecap. Wasn't there 5 months ago during meniscus repair surgery. Any thoughts?
Compare photos: U may have had some 'early' chondromalacia( wear) of your patella 6 months ago and it has progressed or you have had a more significant injury . Make sure your ors has checked your patellofemoral mechanics and tracking. Most ors have photos of your previous"scope" that can be compared to your (upcoming presumably) scope where the lesion can be assessed for progression. Best of luck! ...Read more
