It : It is unclear whether you had diarrhea before you had your gallbladder removed and what the reason was to have your gallbladder removed (stones?). If you had it before and have it now, you will likely have to find another reason that you have diarrhea, as it was not due to your gallbladder. However, if you only developed diarrhea after the cholecystectomy, then the good news is that for most patients, it slowly gets better. The bad news is that it is usually a slow and annoying process. Chronic diarrhea, defined as three or more watery stools per day that last for a month or longer, is something up to 20 percent of all gallbladder surgery patients have to deal with. It is thought that the reason for this, is that the bile coming out of the liver constantly drains into the intestine (rather than being stored in the gallbladder between meals and squirted into the intestine after meals). Bile can be irritating and cause diarrhea. This is called post-cholecystectomy diarrhea due to bile acid malabsorption and is a well-known clinical condition, treatment consists of diet modification - some recommend the “braty†diet, which stands for bananas, rice, applesauce, tea/toast, yogurt. Supplementing your diet with these items, in addition to high fiber foods, may help improve your symptoms. Fiber is important because it adds bulk to your stool and may help firm it up. Pharmacologic treatment with a course of Cholestyramine in doses of 2-12 g/day was effective in a large percentage of patients. ...Read more
