? distal extensor: Sounds like an avulsion of the distal part of the extensor tendon. Splinting for that should be done quickly and not removed for 3-4 weeks minimum for healing to have a chance to occur. If delay between noticing and splinting of more than a couple days success rate diminishes. Re-consult your doctor. ...Read more

Hi, I have a fracture in the top knuckle& tip of my ring finger. I was wondering if getting a splint would be smart? Emerg Doctor did X-ray no splint.

Ortho: Sounds like a consultation with an orthopedist that specializes in hand surgery would be appropriate. Within the week would probably be best. I would go with a splint until then to be safe. Be sure to bring your X-rays. Hope this helps! ...Read more

Good day. How long does it take for a fractured finger to heal? Is it necessary and important for me to go see a doctor again and maybe to take x-ray's again?

Time is on your side: Without knowing the details of the fracture, it is impossible to determine the healing time. An uncomplicated fracture could heal in as little as six weeks but some could take much longer. Follow up visits and x-rays are, in part, protect you from potential complications of the injury. ...Read more

A sliver goes in -: -smoothly, but has rough edges, & when pulled out, there can B a wood fragment left behind. Even if not, U probably have an infection from the contaminated wood. I pulled my groin/inner thigh playing soccer after a long sedentary period and the injured muscles have started bruising. Should I go see a doctor?

Yes.: It is not possible to properly diagnose the extent of the injury without a physical examination, even in the digital age. If there is bruising tracking down the leg, the muscle is at least partially torn. Evaluating range of motion and extent of ecchymosis as well as palpation of the tissue is necessary to make the correct diagnosis and to determine the best treatment. ...Read more

I sprained my index finger on Saturday and on Sunday I Googled my symptoms and it comes up with a sprained finger, I brought a finger splint today, I can still move it, and the pain is subsiding a bit now. Just wondering how long should I keep it on? Also

Keep moving: The movement is definitely a good thing. You don't want to completely NOT move it for a week because that will cause unnecessary stiffness and likely cause the healing to be longer than it would normally. Typically somewhere between 5-7 days depending on how the finger is feeling. It's not an exact science. And just so you know, I can't see the last part of your question on here- sorry! Good luck! ...Read more

I'm showing some symptoms of a sprained finger, how do I know if I need to see a doc?

Depends: If the pain is severe/debilitating, or if there is gross instability of the finger, or if there is significant redness and/or swelling, then I would recommend seeing a doc. Other than that, you can certainly just try ice, elevation, ibupforen, and buddy taping (taping the finger to the one next to it, which provides stability). ...Read more
