Occipital neuralgia: The greater and lesser occipital nerves live in the back of the head on both sides. The lesser nerve runs towards your ear and the greater nerve runs to top of back of your head. These occipital nerves can be aggravated without any trauma. If NO doubt you have anything to be concerned. You just have a bruise under your scalp.

Head injury: Did you lose consciousness or feel nauseas after your injury? Are you having double vision? These are signs of a more serious injury that require immediate medical attention. The throbbing sensation is c/w vascular (migraine) mechanism. MRI brain = current best technology to differentiate (best at showing soft tissue), though CT brain more commonly done because less expensive (though also somewhat less accurate). Maybe: If you had no change in your behavior or nerve function with the trauma or after and all you have is mild headache then this can result from skull trauma rather than brain trauma, in which case further evaluation may not be useful. Probably: Most kids who fall back from their sitting height do not generate the kind of force needed to hurt them. This would be different if they hit the corner of furnature or brickwork. They cry, and settle quiickly. I would be worried if the kid passed out at the time of the fall or developed repeated episodes of vomiting. Some problems in the upper spine can cause headaches. Wondering if this is why it is worse when you lie down.
