Not necessarily: Sometimes blockages within the arteries of the neck can cause "swishing" sounds. The medical term for this is a "bruit". In the neck this is most often from the carotid artery. The sound is created by turbulence in the blood vessel created when the blood is flowing past a blockage / narrowing. Go see ur Family Doc: Be prepared to answer a bunch of questions. What kind of hearing problem? How long has hearing been a problem. Any exposure to loud noises? Any high pitched tones? Dizziness? Any injury or trauma? Car accidents? Swollen glands? Again, how long has neck been hurting? What makes it worse? Better? Any fever? Sore throat? Is pain in front or back? Muscle: It is likely muscle bands / spasms from tension or injury or overuse. They rub over one another when rolling neck/shoulders. Can also be local fluid build up (same causes). Neck sensation: It is unlikely that the sensation is from a fluid source. Upon lying down you may be feeling transient motion of neck muscles or ligaments or even motion involving the ear structures. It doesn't appear to be a serious situation because it is so fleeting and evidently there are no other neck or ear symptoms day or night. ...Read more
