Other options: I agree with dr. Hernandez. Keep the shampoo on scalp for at least 5 minutes 3 x a week. Other options are otc salicylic acid shampoo same way alternating days with nizoral (ketoconazole). Also, scalpicin can be used for itching 1-2 x daily. This is a condition that can be controlled, not cured. See a dermatologist to confirm the diagnosis as other conditions such as psoriasis may appear similar. ...Read more

What to recommend against dandruff? (except anti-dandruff shampoo because none of that stuff actually works)

Maybe not dandruff: Dandruff shampoos actually work quite well if picking the right one and that the problem is truly dandruff-- excessive shedding of dead skin cells on scalp caused by a scalp-specific fungus, malassezia globosa. Dermatologist: If daily shampooing has not controlled your "dandruff" it may be more than dandruff and it would be time to consult a dermatologist to rule out other conditions, such as psoriasis. For good health - Have a diet rich in fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, milk and milk products, nuts, beans, legumes, lentils and small amounts of lean meats. Avoid saturated fats. Drink enough water daily, so that your urine is mostly colorless. Exercise at least 150 minutes/week and increase the intensity of exercise gradually.
