Muscular: This is more of a muscle tension headache than likely anything serious. There are muscles along the spine that insert to the back of the skull. Hard to say: Most likely, given that it sounds like you have had migraines in the past it is either related to muscle tension in your neck or is a migraine variant. In Chinese Medicine or other models there are other likely explanations. If symptoms persisted even for just 24 hours I would suggest a formal office visit. Possible Bruxism: Being awakened or when waking up, if you have a headache, that is a very good indicator of bruxism, which is clenching or grinding your teeth at night. The muscles that control your jaw run up the front, sides and back of your head, including the top and back of the neck. It often isn't something that is audible to a partner while sleeping. Not related : The back of the nose connects with the sinuses and throat. Salt water sniffing is not uncommonly used to help clear sinuses.
