A few possibilities: How did you figure it was L5 &6. There are typically 5 lumbar vertebra, but some patients can have 6. Your surgeon will have to examine you, & work things up with imaging studies, given symptoms on going for over a year. A few of possible diagnosis could include sacroiliitis versus other spinal issues, vascular problem, urologic/gyn etiologies, etc. A work-up & exam will help point to a diagnosis. ...Read more

Related or unrelated: Low back pain associated with leg pain is common , often associated with nerve compression in the lumbar spine. Calf swelling, if related, is usually related to reduced leg mobility. Numbness in hands as well as legs would not be caused only by nerve compression in your lower spine--so do you have two diseases or only one? See a neurologist. ...Read more

Sounds sciatic : It sounds like you have been having back pain due to a disc problem that has now most likely herniated causing not only the back pain more localized to the side it herniated but is now pinching a nerve creating pain down the leg & resulting in the numb feeling in toes. 90% get better non operatively.
