I Have Low Sodium On Tegretol Any Solutions Without Going Off Tegretol
Depends on level: Depends on how low your serum sodium is on routine testing, if you are slightly low, then you probably don't need to do anything. If your sodium levels are in the 120's, increasing your salt intake may improve your values, but this will be your new diet. There are many new anticonvulsants that treat event related epilepsy that do not produce salt wasting, and have fewer side effects than tegretol. ...Read more
Multiple: There are many different types of treatment. However the treatment varies depending on what type of hyponatremia you have. If you have hyponatremia from dehydration, you must have a liquids that have salt (ckn broth or normal saline) in them. If you had hyponatremia because you retain too much fluid, then you must use a water pill to get rid of the excess water and improve your serum sodium. ...Read more
I have hyponatremia, low chloride and high TSH 12.8. Sodium went to 116. Many hospitalizations. Take 10 1gr sodium tabs. Fluid res?
Low sodium: You need to see an endocrinologist (ea) as soon as possible. You are hypothyroid (h) with your high tsh. That could be one cause of your low sodium (ls). Ls is a life-threatening situation. See an e, get your h treated with medicine and you may stop the need for your sodium pills and avoid future hospitalizations. You will also begin to feel better. ...Read more
I have long standing hyponatremia, low chloride plus high TSH 12.8. I have been hospitalized mult times had seizure. Taking 10 1gr sodium. Fluid res?
FInd out why: I trust you are not taking a diuretic for some reason, and I trust you do not have inappropriate ADH (vasopressin) secretion due to porphyria or some other illness. Especially, I hope you don't have undiagnosed addison's disease especially with the high TSH (possible schmidt's). Have you been evaluated for one of the syndromes of renal sodium wasting? ...Read more
Why might Trileptal be a better option than tegretol which I take 600 of...Does not Trileptal lower your sodium more than tegretol-?
Water excess: Hi. Hyponatremia is virtually ALWAYS due to water excess, NOT sodium deficiency. Depending on how LOW below normal your sodium is, correction may have to be done fairly gradually to prevent harm. You need to see a competent diagnostician to assess your volume status (fluid overloaded, dehydrated, or normal), and causative conditions, then institute water restriction (or a vaptan drug). Good luck! ...Read more

I have been told by my dr. Subscribed 1 gm of sodium chloride 2x's daily for chronic hyponatremia...they cause nausea-vomiting. Could I be allergic?
Wrong treatment: Hi. The treatment for hyponatremia depends on the patient's volume status (dehydrated, volume over-loaded, or normal volume status) and the underlying cause. The most common cause, SIADH, is treated with water restriction (or one of the new vaptan drugs), NOT by giving salt. Nausea and vomiting can be FROM severe hyponatremia. It wouldn't be a bad idea for you to see an endocrinologist. ...Read more
Ckd patient with hyponatremia. Is it safe to take 650 mg sodium bicarbonate with 40 mg lasix (furosemide) to prevent water retention? Is sodium bicarbonate renoprotective?
Depends: Bicarbonate (sodium bicarbonate (sodium bicarbonate)) is not reno-protective. However, high acid levels in the blood affect heart function, muscle function and kidney function. Reducing the blood acid level (seen by a rising bicarbonate (sodium bicarbonate) level or pH level) improves muscle function including the heart which improves kidney circulation. It also allows the kidneys to better control potassium levels. You can help the process by avoiding sodas! ...Read more
Could a runner running in the heat who was drinking a sport drink with only potassium chloride and carbohydrates (no sodium at all) get hyponatremia?
Yes.: Any drink that doesn't taste like the ocean is mostly water, regardless of whether it contains sodium or not. Long distance runners can be susceptible to hyponatremia, and risk factors include long distances (marathons, ultra-marathons), women, low body weight, inadequate training, and water loading before and during the race, especially if more weight is gained by water than lost by sweat. ...Read more
Can lamictal 100 be taken at noon. And is 100 mg relatively low because it is taken with 600 tegretol. Am I even getting a therapeutic dose?
What should I do if I have a chronically low white cell count. Should I let a doctor put me on tegretol?
Might use different: Since tegretol has on occasion caused bone marrow suppression, and even pancytopenia, would suggest choosing a medication which would not affect white cell count. You do not indicate rationale for this medication, but certainly confer with your doctor about alternatives. ...Read more

Can tegretol or klonopin (clonazepam) cause suicidal ideation /just strange thoughts even at low doses?
Klonopin (clonazepam): Especially can cause changes in mentation (it is a sedative). Tegretol, a non-habit-forming anti-epileptic is less likely to do this, but it does change brain function. There is not a lot of difference between tegretol doses that are effective and those that cause side effects (sluggish thinking, and many other side effects). ...Read more
How much water would a person have to drink over a period of 12 hours in order to develop hyponatremia? I've drank about 9 cups of fluid in 12 hours, but I feel like that's too much. Also, I have a mildly low K level (3.2), so is that too much H2O?
Polydypsia: It is very difficult to abort normal homeostatic mechanisms in the reported manner, forcing the issue will lead to serious consequence; why do you ask?? Low K will cause cardiac and muscle problems, so stop and think. And get help ...Read more

Low t-endocrinologist put me on andro gel 3 yrs. Ago. See no difference. Says it will help with bones as age. Also take tegretol. Can this cause low t?

Plenty: Include drowsiness, dizziness, upset stomach, nausea, toxicity to liver and/or bone marrow, with rare severe anemias, low sodium levels, elevated cholesterol, and of course, allergic reactions. Should I stop taking tegretol if I'm getting side effects 3 days after restarting it? I was on it before and it was stopped and started again.
Perhaps: First, important to know why it is being prescribed. If for epilepsy, dangerous to suddenly stop and should be slowly tapered off. Since it is a potent anti-epileptic drug, stopping could result in sz activity if done incorrectly. There are several other choices in both psychiatry and neurology, and newer drugs may have far fewer adverse rxtns. ...Read more

Went from 600mg of tegretol to 400 mg of tegretol for 1 week-going back up to 600mg. How long until therapeutic level is reached? (on 600 for 5 years)

Iam on dilanta 100mg 3 times a day how can I wean off of it and go on tegretol without any pains?
Why on dilantin?: Dilantin is most often used for seizure and rarely used for pain control. Why do you need to change? If using for seizure, should take about 5-6 doses of tegretol, then can stop dilantin. If using for pain, no need to wean. Anyhow, it is best to consult doc who has been treating you because he/she knows your condition better than any of us here. Good luck and happy new year. ...Read more
I have trilgimal nerugia I'm on gabapintin dilanta just started tegretol 100 chewable. My blood levels on dilanta was 4.5 is it still working?
Combination: The combined use of tegretol and Dilantin is tricky and should be guided by a neurologist who is most used to using two antiseizure medications simultaneously. The usual therapeutic level of Dilantin is 10to20 but it can lower the serum level of tegretol and perhaps you're recommended to take a lower dose because of this effect on tegretol. ...Read more

Low Sodium in Blood: Although the term hyponatremia means "low sodium in blood", it is caused by abnormal handling of water by the kidneys. Reabsorption of water in the kidneys rely on a hormone called ADH (vasopressin) produced in the brain and there are instances where a high concentration is secreted either appropriately (e.g. severe volume contraction) or inapproprately (e.g. medication causing SIADH (vasopressin)). ...Read more
