10 days postpartum and having heart palpitations since delivery. They come and go, but usually happen for a few hours every day. Worse after eating.

Could be worrisome: But if the palpitations are not persistent I would expect it to be a side effect of the postpartum fluid and hormonal shifts. You should follow-up soon with your OB. At the least you need your vitals checked, and possibly some blood tests and EKG. ...Read more

Palpitations: Palpitations have many causes from anxiety through anatomic and physiologic abnormalities. The feeling of bounding usually relates to the volume of blood pumped with each palpitation. Why do I get heart palpitations every morning after working a night shift?

Why do I get heart palpitations every morning after working a night shift?

You Must See Your Dr: Night shift workers have more palpitations and heart problems than non-shift workers. Partly this may be due to increased stress and sleep deprivation associated with night shift work. But also the night shift interferes with your bodies biological clock (circadian rhythm); which in turn is synched to daylight and darkness.

Can frequent heart palpitations damage your heart or cause problems? I'm getting them every couple of minutes. I should add I have bad anxiety

Heart palpitations: It's so common to have heart palpitations, everyone has them. They do not cause damage. Sometimes we feel them, sometimes we don't.

They are more important when we are monitoring people who are suffering ongoing heart disease. If you have had a normal heart exam and EKG to evaluate this, you're probably going to be fine. ...Read more

See your physician: Or other health care provider. There is no way to know whether you should be concerned without a full medical evaluation, which would include your complete history, review of systems, family history and a physical examination. Your PCP will probably want to do an electrocardiogram as well, and may want a 24 hour ECG recording called a Holter Monitor. In the meantime stop all caffeine/stimulant use ...Read more

An ECG at your local doctor's office or urgent care is a good idea, go to the ER if worse. See a cardiologist and consider a 24 or 48 hour Holter monitor. ...Read more

I suffer from heart palpitations every now and then, have chronic constipation. Are they related? What can I do to get rid of heart palpitations?

Probably not: The two problems are probably not related. In young healthy people, heart palpitations are most often caused by early heartbeats, or premature ventricular contractions, which are often brought on by stress or caffeine. If they continue for several minutes or happen more frequently, though, you should see a doctor to have a heart tracing or ekg done, to be sure it is nothing more serious. ...Read more

Am 19. I've read stories of ventricular tachycardia and sudden death and am worried every time I have heart palpitations. Reassurance would be great?

Relax: We all have occasional extra heart beats. If you have a structurally normal heart (no weakening of the muscle) and no other familial risk factors (Long QT, ARVD, Cardiomyopathy, etc.) then you really don't have anything to worry about. Ask your doctor to get an EKG and or a 24 hour monitor. A physical exam should be sufficient but if you need more reassurance an ECHO would be beneficial. ...Read more

I'm weening myself off Prevacid (lansoprazole) with the help of a Betaine/Pepsin HCL pill every morning. It helps but I now have heart palpitations. Side effect?

Betaine HCL/pepsin: There are no reported cases on palpitations but theoretically the pepsin/HCL combo could have negative vagal feedback (vagus stimulation produces pepsin on our stomach). The vagus nerve via parasympathetic stmulation slows the heart and if it is inhibited there could be increase heart rate. You could try stopping the meds and seeing if palpitations stop. Check B6, folate (folic acid), B12. F/U with doc. ...Read more
