Can the mirena (levonorgestrel) threads break off, and does it cause cramps?

Can the mirena (levonorgestrel) threads break off, and does it cause cramps?

Unlikely, possible: The strings have not been known to break off but depending on how short they were cut and how large the uterine cavity, they can retract up inside and not be felt or seen.
Cramps may happen especially early, if it has been in for a while and strings not felt and new cramps, an evaluation is warrented to make sure it's not in the uterine wall. ...Read more

I've had my mirena (levonorgestrel) for 2 years, am still able to feel the threads when I check. I had intercourse 7 days ago and he pulled out. Should I be concerned?

I don't see why: Since you are using one of the most effective methods of contraception and you can "feel the threads", your risk of pregnancy is really quite low (less than 1%).
If you and your sex partner do not have any sexually transmissible infection, your risk of a pelvic infection are also quite remote. If you need to be reassured, consult a Gyn to be screened and ask your man to use condoms. ...Read more

I had the mirena (levonorgestrel) coil Inserted last Friday and tonight I can see the threads hanging out! Is this normal?

Not normal: The IUD string should be coming out of the cervix not out of the vagina. IF you can see the string then they were not cut short enough or the IUD is coming out. Do not have sex or rely on it for birth control. See your Obgyn tomorrow to have it checked out. ...Read more

Is there anyway for my boyfriend to not feel the mirena (levonorgestrel) threads during sex? He sometimes mentions it but It doesn't always bother him.

As my gp can see and feel the mirena (levonorgestrel) threads does it mean it's in place? As they won't give me a scan.

As my gp can see and feel the mirena (levonorgestrel) threads does it mean it's in place? As they won't give me a scan.

Most likely: Generally, if the string is in the right place, so is the IUD, but misplacement is never impossible. If you develop severe pain or bleeding, call your doctor. An ultrasound is the easiest way to be 100% sure. Hope this helps! ...Read more

Have the mirena (levonorgestrel) and threads feel longer, been on my period for the last week and half, any chance it has moved (got a scan tomorrow morning)?

Have the mirena (levonorgestrel) and threads feel longer, been on my period for the last week and half, any chance it has moved (got a scan tomorrow morning)?

Wait and see: It is good that you can still feel your strings. Since you have an ultrasound scheduled for this morning then there is no reason for us to guess. Just wait a few hours and the sonogram will confirm if it is still correctly in place or if your body is attempting to expel it. ...Read more

Could bleeding after sex be due to the mirena (levonorgestrel) coil? Had it fitted week ago, since then have bled bright red blood after sex, plus Dr can't find threads

Yes.: Many women will have some bleeding and cramping with or without sex after having an IUD placed. This is usually temporary. If your doctor cannot see the strings then he or she could perform an ultrasound to verify that the IUD is in the uterus. Hope this helps. ...Read more

I have the mirena (levonorgestrel) coil fitted and the threads seem longer, I've had intermittent stomach cramps could it have moved?

It's possible: It's difficult to tell the location of your iud solely by the length of the strings. It's possible that it has descended or is even in the process of being expelled. You should schedule an appointment with your doctor. He or she can do a pelvic examination and perform an ultrasound to confirm its location. Use a backup method of birth control just to be safe until your appointment. ...Read more

Does a mirena break or stretch a hymen?

Does a mirena break or stretch a hymen?

Merina IUD: To insert merina the health professional need to insert a speculum to be able to visualise the cervix and insert the devise, so there has to be some stretch on the hymen.

Can the mirena (levonorgestrel) cause break outs?

Can the mirena (levonorgestrel) cause break outs?

Highly unlikely: The Mirena (levonorgestrel) iud causes an extremely tiny amount of hormone into your body every day for about 5 years. The dose is so small that it is very unlikely to cause acne or any other systemic illness. There are lots of reasons for acne to get worse, but the Mirena (levonorgestrel) iud is not a very likely cause. ...Read more

33yr old female, mirena (levonorgestrel) iud, 5yrs in Feb, cycle has come on twice in one week apart and is heavy. Should I be concerned?

Need checked: I am assuming it will be due for removal in Feb 2016. If it was 5 years this last Feb it is no longer active and that could be the issue with bleeding. It could be infection causing the bleeding and you probably need a string check with it. Schedule a follow up this week. ...Read more

6 weeks ago, I received the mirena, (levonorgestrel) I have been having terrible hormone skin break outs on my face, will this continue for much longer?

Mirena (levonorgestrel): There is a small amount of levonorgestrel implanted in the IUD which is there to decrease bleeding and decrease cramping during menses. The IUD will let out small amounts of this progesterone for the next 5 years. This MAY mean you will have acne during the entire time. It is also possible that your body will regulate hormone secretion after a few months and this will resolve. Talk to your doc ...Read more

I had the mirena (levonorgestrel) for 9 months and had it removed because of excessive spotting. Since removal on Feb 6th. I haven't had A period should I be concerned?

Pregnancy test?: It's been over 6 weeks without a period. If you have been having unprotected intercourse, its possible you are pregnant. If pregnancy isn't possible, I would still suggest an evaluation by an Ob/Gyn. Most normal women would start having regular periods by this point. Best wishes! ...Read more

2nd month on Mirena (levonorgestrel) not due for period for 4 days, spotted today red blood for 2 hrs, is it a reason for concern?

No: The Mirena (levonorgestrel) can lead to irregular or non-existant periods or some low-grade spotting all the time — if you are sure it is still in place then take a pregnancy test to be 100% sure it is not a pregnancy and then your body has to work out the cycle with the iud in place ...Read more
