Salt water cleanout: Chronic phlegm is often a result of postnasal drip. My first suggestion be to try to wash out the postnasal drip. A salt water wash out of your nasal passageways on a daily basis can be useful. There are many nasal rinse kits available over-the-counter for this. Mucinex, (guaifenesin) MD: Thick phlegm can be thinned out with something like a mucinex, (guaifenesin) which can be found at most drug stores. However, if this is a chronic problem, you should visit an md to determine what the root cause of the phlegm is: reflux, allergies, post-nasal drip, or lung issues. Sounds: like our old" friend" INFLUENZA....Take Tylenol or a NSAID for the fever/aches...drink lots of fluids...REST and if it goes into a third week have a hands on exam by your PCP (Primary Care Provider) WHO SHOULD ALSO KNOW what viruses are active in your community.
