Do not know: We are now immunizing elderly with vaccine against varicella to decrease risk of zoster. These individuals had chicken pox. They get zoster because their immune system declines with age, allowing zoster to occur. Since you had chicken pox, the virus is in you. We do not know how long your immunity to virus will last, but it is probably not forever. I recommend zoster vaccine later in life. ...Read more

Unlikely an issue: A properly vaccinated kid would have about a 5 % risk of ever getting varicella.Ophthalmic shingles is only contagious through the debris from the lesions, not though droplets like regular chickenpox. Unlikely to happen: There are a few vaccinated kids who remain less than fully protected, especially if they have not completed the two shot series. However, shingles is not as contagious as the wild chickenpox, it has no airborne phase. To be exposed the child would have to have direct contact with the material from the caretakers wounds. Simple hygienic care/handwashing/etc will avoid passing it on. ...Read more
