See a physician: 26 year old male with sore throat and cough. Most cases of sore throat are viral, whereas strep is a bacterial cause of sore throat. It is hard to tell the difference at home. Viral infection: Almost all upper respiratory tract infections start with a virus. The fact that you have nasal congestion associated with the sore throat is typical of a viral etiology. May be difficult: Initially, it may be very difficult. A strep throat however, is often accompanied by a headache and/or abdominal pain, as well as a fairly severe headache as well as a progressively severe sore throat that will make even swallowing difficult. Have what looks like a blister with a white center where one tonsil used to be. Sore throat and nephew had strep about a week ago, could I have strep?

It's possible: Generally with "classic" strep throat the tonsils are red, have pus on them, but it sounds like you had your tonsils removed? You could still get a strep infection, just not strep tonsillitis. The only way to really know is to get a simple strep test - takes about 5 min to do. See your MD or go to an urgent care (NOT the ER!) There's no home remedy for strep, so if it's positive you need meds! ...Read more

I'm just wondering, if you have a sore throat and a fever does that rule out a normal sore throat?

I'm just wondering, if you have a sore throat and a fever does that rule out a normal sore throat?

Not always: For significant sore throat with swollen tonsils / lymph nodes – see physician & get a strep throat test/ culture. If you have strep throat, antibiotic therapy is imperative to prevent future complications. Consider tylenol (acetaminophen) or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications. Saltwater gargles: mix 1 tsp salt in 8 oz warm water – gargle several times a day. Or gargle with aloe vera juice twice a day. ...Read more

Get checked.: Strep throat can present in a lot of ways. Sometimes it can present just like a regular cold, with no fever or even a sore throat. This is a problem because strep gets better without treatment, but if it is not treated, you risk developing rheumatic fever. So get checked. I have a runny nose with yellow mucus is this a infection or a virus sore nose and throat too treatments?

Probably a virus: Almost all nasal infections that lead to yellow mucus begin as viral infections. If you've only been sick for a day or two it is most certainly a virus at this point and should improve over the next week. If after 7 to 10 days you're no better or worse then the possibility of bacterial superinfection becomes greater. At that point antibiotics may be needed. For now hydration, tylenol (acetaminophen) and rest. ...Read more

Strep throat: Only a doctor can make the diagnosis by examining you and doing one of several possible tests on a throat swab, or if it is typically strep clinically they may just treat you. Treatment will not necessarily alter the course of the illness if started more than 24 hrs after onset, but it will prevent poststreptococcal complications, namely acute rheumatic fever. Go and see somebody now. ...Read more
