I have sharp pain in my left chest and short of breath. Pain doesn't change with deep breath and comes and goes. Could this be a lung clot?

No : Blood clots in the lungs are painless. As you suggest, if they involve the pleura, they cause pleuritic pain (worse with deep breath). Shortness of breath is present in almost all patients with pulmonary embolism (clot). Risk factors should prompt evaluation: birth control pills, immobilization, cancer, cast, prolonged travel, known clotting diathesis, marked obesity, recent surgery or injury. ...Read more

Likely unrelated: Give it a day or so, if the pain does not go away, it would be prudent to see a doctor. You may take Tylenol for the pain. Do not drink alcohol for one day after taking Tylenol, better yet, do not drink alcohol ever.
For good health — Have a diet rich in fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, milk and milk products, nuts, beans, legumes, lentils and small amounts of lean meats. Avoid saturated fats. Drink enough water daily, so that your urine is mostly colorless. Exercise at least 150 minutes/week and increase the intensity of exercise gradually. Hmmm: Could be a muscle strain. If you are having shortness of breath and pain radiating down your arm it would be cardiac in nature. Try some aleve (naproxen) and see if that helps. Go see your doctor if not getting better. ...Read more

Likely musculoskelet: At your age (27) heart attack is extremely unlikely. My first assumption would be that you have muscle soreness in your pectoral muscle or underlying intercostal (rib) muscles. Hi, I have a sharp pain on my left chest rib side. Its sore when I cough or sneeze. It's been there for about 1 to 2 weeks now.
I stopped smoking a week ago due to coughing attacks and pain. What could it be?

This type of pain: Suggests rib or pleura (the lung and heart lining) problems. My first thought might be a rib fracture.perhaps a fall or injury when you didn't appreciate the severity of the trauma. Or inflammation of pleura from a viral/other infection causing inflammation. You could take ibuprofen in suggested doses for up to a week. If no improvement, see Doc. Take this "silver lining" and stay off cigarettes! ...Read more

Chest discomfort: It's true that tension can cause chest muscle tightness. As long as you don't have worsening with exertion, cough, unusual shortness of breath, tenderness or palpitations, it doesn't sound like a heart or lung problem. Your physician knows you best and will advise you if further testing is advisable. ...Read more

Chest pain: There are several possibilities. With it lasting this long, okay to ask for a CXR, EKG and blood tests. If these initial tests are all negative, then in follow up talk to your doc about more imaging (mammogram and chest CT) or a visit with a chest specialist/pulmonologist. Be well. ...Read more
