Maybe nothing or ...: Large tonsils, in & of themselves, aren't necessarily abnormal. Nor are white spots on back of throat (might be food!). If you're feeling sick eg sore throat, fever, swollen glands, etc, that's something different (retropharyngeal abscess?). Viral or bacterial?: This could be a viral infection as it can present with redness, swelling, pain and white patches. Strep throat is another cause but it often has a higher fever and more clinical/body symptoms where the viral is usually more local symptoms. Sore throat: Pus in the back of the throat area could be due to Strep, mono or other infectious causes. Good to get a culture of that in a docs office or urgent care center where you can get placed on the right treatment. Sometimes a clue to the etiology is your contacts prior to the symptoms you have-- if you've been around someone with Strep, then it's Strep most likely. Could be viral: Obviously a diagnosis cannot be provided based on just the three elements you provided, but one possibility that comes quickly to mind is mono. There are viral infections that can cause the signs and symptoms you describe and these would not be responsive to antibiotics. A thorough evaluation by your physician is recommended.. ...Read more

Maybe: Mono symptoms are much more pronounced than what you are describing. Usually the tonsils are swollen and tender and look awful. You can always ask your doctor to get a mono blood titer or a blood test on you to diagnose mono. ...Read more

Go to doctor: Go to your doctor, although it might be just URI ( viral upper respiratory infection) that requires only symptomatic treatment, there is also a possibility of strep throat, that if left untreated might cause serious complications. See you doctor : It sounds like strep throat. A quick visit to your doctor should verify. Usually a round of antibiotics will resolve the issuen. If it is painful ask for a viscous lidocaine rinse. This will numb the area while your body recovers. Hope this helps! ...Read more
