Please advise if it's common to have difficulty falling asleep after staying awake for an extended period of time?

Past wk just began to have difficulty falling asleep before 1 am (wide awake!); so hard to get up in am; sleep thro alarm. Sleep aids don't help. why?

I have difficulty falling asleep at night, though Xanax (alprazolam) isn't for that I used to take it to knock me out. Xanax (alprazolam) isn't an option anymore. What else??
R meds the answer?: I would want 2know the specific reasons u aren't sleeping well. I'd 1st want u2 have medical checkup. If there don't appear 2b any underlying physical reasons, I'd then want info on your daily routines -what u do, what u eat, etc. Also, I'd what 2understand the stressors in your life, the thoughts run thru your head when u try 2 sleep & when u r awake. I've noticed when I have a licorice tea at night I have difficulty falling asleep. Coincidence? Or is there something to that?

Can rhinoplasty influence sleep apnea? I am suffering from obstructive sleep apnea. Snoring at night and difficulty falling asleep are usual things for me. I am about to have a rhinoplasty. Could the change in the shape of my nose reduce my sleep apnea?
Agree w Dr. Jacobson: Retire ; rise same time each day. Keep bedroom dark ; cool ; use only for sex ; sleep. Turn off tv. No naps. Exercise regularly but not in late evening. A number of things: There could be sleep apnea. You could also have underlying depression as well, which can also disturb sleep. Caffeine may also disturb sleep, as can alcohol.
