Doubtful: In the old days, it was called the "bible" treatment to rupture a ganglion cyst on a person's wrist. As the bible was usually the biggest book in people's houses, it was told to people to swing it hard against the wrist to rupture the cyst. The blow i'm sure hurt more than the cyst rupturing. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers

I had a ganglion cyst pressed on & popped by my doc a few weeks ago. I have INTENSE sharp pain and feels as though I slept on it wrong, why?
Nerve ending trauma?: Sometimes compression/pressure can get the cyst to resolve, but there is a risk of trauma to the nerve endings, particularly if the cyst "pops," as yours did. This could result in the intense pain you describe. Other approaches that have been used to treat ganglion cysts include aspiration, which has a risk of occurrence, and surgery, which can provide definitive care. Hope you feel better soon. ...Read more
I had a ganglion cyst pressed on & popped by my doc a few weeks ago. I have INTENSE sharp pain now and feels as though I slept wrong on it. why?
Yes: If it is in fact a ganglion cyst, which arises from a joint, most often the wrist, it may rupture or be drained, but they usually eventually return. Anything is possible: But unlikely. Ganglions are filled with mucin, which is similar to synovial fluid found in joints. When they "pop" the fluid goes into the surrounding soft tissue and subcutaneous space. Very little if any of the fluid is immediately absorbed into the blood stream. Instead, the fluid is resorbed slowly over time. Feeling sick at the time is likely coincidental, or a vagal response. ...Read more

These cysts do not need treatment unless they are painful and persistent. Many of them will resolve with rest. While there are accounts of patients bursting these cysts with a heavy object, there is also the possibility of aggravating the cyst. If necessary, see a hand surgeon. ...Read more

Wrangling Wrist Pain: Anatomically, wrist pain due to a ganglion cyst is thought to be related to a distension of the lining of the joint or the surface of the bone itself due to fluid accumulation under pressure. Pain may recur after surgery due to inflammation in the joint, synovium, or the bone itself. The simple fact you had one means some force affected your anatomy to respond with a cyst.
